Verdanturf Town Between Snowpoint and Lilycove
There was no point to Alyssa’s day other than helping to re-build her hometown, Verdanturf in midwestern Hoenn. She couldn’t say that she didn’t know why it had been practically destroyed – she knew full well at least two people that were involved. Steven Stone and Cynthia Monet, two Champions of the world past, and the two idols she’d admired since she was old enoguh to understand the differences between those who battled strictly for power, and those that battled with power. It was disappointing to know they were involved in the destruction of a place she held so dear, but there was nothing she could do about it. She had no intentions of talking to Cynthia anytime soon given the Sinnoh Champion was Lux. Steven, on the other hand, would be more ‘available’ in a way, despite the fact they didn’t get along.
Don’t think about that now... she told herself, curling her lip as she finished nailing the shutters onto the herbalist’s house – one most directly affected by the explosion of the tea shop that was practically right next door. ..nothing you can do about it while you’re here. Sighing, Hoenn’s Leader glanced subconsciously over her shoulders. She was not supposed to be here at all, not unless she had a death wish. My presence must mean I have one, though... she mused silently to herself. The promise from her parents that a bullet would be put through her brain if she came within ten feet of the tiny town’s border was a very real threat, and one that she had heeded for two years.
Now though, she was violating that and putting herself at risk using the power of logic and the sheer force within her to set foot into the place she called home with a relief and rebuilding effort. Rations had been handed out not long ago for lunch, and she’d seen to it that everybody helping out, both the people she’d brought and citizens that knew her alike were fed.
Another sigh escaped the white-haired Leader and she stepped back, hands dropped loosely by her sides as she stared at the finished product, her gaze dulled as her mind drifted away absently.

Sometime ago Ruby promised the couple to help out with the pokemon as they helped him quite a bit on his various journeys, not to mention with all this war nonsense going on the old couple had become too afraid to do their normal rounds. As the Daycare man broke his hip not too long ago the couple decided to call in the favor which Ruby hadn't minded in the least. The young man was more than happy to help out the older couple when they needed it.
This was about an hour ago and seeing as he finished everything they needed him to do and he wasn't in the mood to really go back to the apartment he decided he'd see what was up in Verdanturf. Ruby heard news about the reconstruction going in the town and he figured he he might as well go to help. Upon arriving he saw people working everywhere, he knew Steven played a pretty big part in causing this as well as the champion from Hoenn, Cynthia. They certainly did a number on the town that much was obvious.
Ruby was walking through the town looking for a good place to start until he saw a familiar face... Well a familiar head at least the girl was facing a wall so he only saw the back of her head. If it was anyone else he probably wouldn't have noticed but this person had a very odd hair color and the height seemed to match up as well so he decided to approach the individual to confirm it was who she thought she was.
"Didn't expect to see you here, Alyssa." Ruby said nonchalantly waiting for the individual to turn around.

A voice she’d not heard for a while met her ears and she turned in surprise. A familiar face was the first thing she saw among the shuffling crowd of people moving back and forth in the ruin of Verdanturf. Smiling a bit before dropping the hammer through the leather sash of tools she wore, Hoenn’s Leader turned and stepped towards Ruby. ”Didn’t expect to see you here, either.” she said, her blue eyes meeting his red ones with a friendly light in them. Last time she’d seen him had been in Pastoria City of Sinnoh far from their home. Now, though, they had a small reunion in their home regions.
”I’m glad to see you, though,” she told him, turning once to wave over to one of the contractors standing a ways off. He gave an understanding nod before vanishing to get the herbalist whose house had just been finished. ”…did you stop by to help re-construct as well?” Turning her gaze back to him, her eyes spelled out her thoughts; she hoped he was here to help reconstruct for the sake of the town as well as other things, though if that wasn’t his purpose she wouldn’t force him.
The help was needed and would be appreciated, and the company would be enjoyed.
The herbalist came into sight and Alyssa diverted her attention to greet her. She’d known the older woman growing up, as well as the herbalist’s mother, whom Alyssa assumed was no longer around and the woman had a child of her own who would undoubtedly take up the trade.
Kip, the tiny blue Mudkip Alyssa had sent to accompany the child and make time pass on the day they finally got their house back go more smoothly, ran back with them. The formalities of finishing the house were discussed quietly, though not as though they were trying to hide anything from Ruby. ”I hope you enjoy your new home.” Alyssa told them with a smile.
Before closing the door, Alyssa heard the herbalist murmur something about Nox not being as bad as they were spelled out to be. A small smile pulled at her lips and Alyssa crouched, picking up the Mudkip that was pawing at her legs and cradling her in her arms. ”You’d probably expect me not to bother with reconstruction, huh?” she asked, smirking a bit. ”Normally I’d have others do this but…Verdanturf’s my hometown.” Alyssa told him, shrugging slightly. ”I needed to be here at least once.”

In truth it was a bit funny watching the tiny girl work this hard, he wondered what would happen if she had to reach for something high up. Thinking about it the boy chuckled lightly, but said nothing. He would wait until she finished before speaking himself.
“Yeah I was in the area so I thought I might as well help out, after all someone has too right?” The boy laughed lightly once again “The Day Care couple needed some help babysitting the pokemon and I was happy to oblige after all they’re good people, and seeing as I was close decided to help with the reconstruction. the boy responded simply.
“Anyways care to lead me to the part of town where I can pick up some tools? Can’t do much with my hands alone you know.” Ruby remembered this town at its peak, it was where he did his first contest a couple of months after the whole Legendary incident. The feeling of winning a contest was completely different from winning a pokemon battle, he couldn’t explain it but it felt good.
“So what was it like growing up here. Seems pretty boring if you ask me, or at least Wally thinks it’s pretty boring seeing as he ran away to become a trainer all those years ago.” Ruby asked engaging the girl in conversation. He didn’t really wanna bring up the war right now as it stressed him out, so he’d stay on light topics unless she engaged him in it directly.
“Oh yeah this is your home so did you see your guardian yet?” He asked not deciding against saying parents as she might have been orphaned or had a situation where they weren't around he didn’t want to offend her or bring something up that would make her feel bad.

Alyssa smiled a bit at the mention of the Day Care couple. They had been close friends of her parents’, a pair of pokemon breeders and then an elderly couple that specialized in raising pokemon and allowing them to interact with others outside of their own trainers’ pokemon and battle in a non-competitive manner to grow as they would have naturally. She listened to his explanation and her smile widened subconsciously. The fact that he was willing to help simply because he was around and had the time was a re-assuring thought. Looks like the rumors about him were true – decent heart, willing to help, etcetera, she thought silently.
”The Day Care couple have been around for ages.” she said with a smile. ”I know them quite well. I never invested in their services, though…” Hoenn’s Leader had preferred to train all of her pokemon by hand, never letting them pass into the hands of another. There was a rare occasion when somebody handled a pokeball that belonged to her, but it was such an uncommon occurrence that she couldn’t even remember the last time somebody else handled her pokemon.
Once Ruby asked how all he could help, she automatically started running through the list in her mind of possible options for him. From painting the interior of houses to moving furniture, to even building the houses themselves there was any number of tasks she could assign him to. Which one would be best for him, though? She almost missed his question because of how rapidly the majority of her concentration had shifted from him to her own thoughts and she had to blink once or twice to get herself back on topic.
The tail end of his question caught her slightly off guard, and she hesitated before speaking. ”At the moment I’m going to check the status of some other things, so you can come with me until then. An assessment of how things are doing will give me a better idea of where to send you.” with a smile. Nodding forward slightly to gesture to him to come with her, she started walking, keeping her arms crossed firmly to prevent Kip from squirming out of her grip.
While allowing her eyes to scan the others working and take a silent status of things, she spoke to Ruby.
”Growing up here was peaceful.” she told him, shrugging some. ”It could get boring if you did nothing but sit around. Oftentimes I spent portions of the year in other cities around Hoenn…Rustboro and Sootopolis mostly, but I got to see the rest of the Region before I was old enough to start my pokemon journey. I started preparing for it as soon as I was old enough to comprehend things well enough to commit them to memory.” She chuckled a little. ”To be honest, my tenth birthday was something I wanted more than anything else in the world – to have my name recognized internationally as well, and to become known as the most powerful pokemon trainer in the world.”
Although it wasn’t exactly a ‘tactful’ evasion of the topic, she hoped that her bit of history had made it seem as though she’d forgotten his latter question.

“Fair enough.” Ruby responded to the girl when he was told to follow her and soon the two were on their way. He listened to her stories of growing up and about how she’d visited multiple places in the region before her actual journey. “That’s pretty cool, I moved here from Goldenrod right before I was about to start my journey in Johto.” He stopped for moment thinking about the next part of his own story. “But you know my dad got the job as the Petalburg Gym Leader and well, I’m sure you know the rest of the story.” he finished quietly. Ruby rarely brought up his dad in conversation as of late due to their positions in the war.
In order to distract himself from his thoughts about his family he once again focused on the people working on different areas of the town. Some were planting gardens, some were repairing shops, some were giving out rations, overall it was pretty peaceful. Something he appreciated greatly.
As for his second question he wouldn’t pester her about it. Everyone had sensitive topics and he wouldn’t appreciate it if someone poked at his. He thought about calling out his pokemon to help the relief effort, but quickly dispersed the idea. This was still a Lux town and who knew if there was a soldier or two around who knew him. It was wiser to keep all of his pokemon with him for now at least. He would release one pokemon for company though, one who was more than capable of taking care of himself, and one that wouldn’t wander off. Ruby held out Nexio’s pokeball and released the Sceptile. The tree pokemon had been meaning to stretch his legs for a while now. Even after having been with ruby for all these years he still really disliked pokeballs no matter how useful they were.
“Hope you don’t mind.” Ruby said aloud whilst walking behind Alyssa, "He needs the exercise.” Ruby smiled at the green pokemon who scoffed in return. The peaceful air that had settled over the town for the time being reminded Alyssa of how it had been growing up. Calm, quiet, a place where one could use their entire day to do a single task if they so pleased. Residents of Verdanturf, unless spurred to do otherwise, rode the winds as they came and went, rarely seizing initiative for themselves and uprooting their feet from the tiny town. Juan, Wally, and herself were prime examples of what could happen to those that did so. She nodded at his words as well. She’d known that Ruby and his parents moved to Hoenn from Johto shortly before Norman took the place as Petalburg Gym Leader. I do,” she told him.
Aside from his origins, he’d become well-known throughout all of Hoenn for his accomplishments alongside Wallace, Steven, and Sapphire in triumphing over Team Magma and Aqua. A thought struck her at the thought of them, Perhaps I should inform him of what Maxie told me…. Her meeting recently with the leader of Team Magma had revealed that the organization was, in fact, still alive. Whether Ruby was aware of that or not…well…she would just have to find out one way or another.
The sound of a pokeball clicking open made Alyssa glance back. A Sceptile appeared by Ruby’s side and she smiled some. A Treecko must have been his starter. ”Not at all.” she told him with a shake of her head. ”I know a number of my Pokemon would like to get out to move around too, but I can’t let them all out.” A small chuckle escaped her. ”People in the town do support Lux still, but I think many are beginning to see what Nox is doing aside from what got the town to this state in the first place…” Her shoulders rose and fell with a shrug, ”...I know at least three-quarters of the people that live here, too. They trust my judgment, for the most part."
Turning behind two of the houses in the middle of the town, Alyssa froze abruptly. If Ruby were following too closely behind her he would collide with her shoulder. Before her, behind the house and hidden from the eyes of everybody else, were two pokemon. A Baltoy and Mawile, her Baltoy and Mawile to be exact. Their bodies were severely burned, the Baltoy’s was charred with ash, and its skin was blistered from high temperatures, while the Mawile beside it was covered more with electrical burns.
”What in Arceus’ name…” she murmured, her eyes half-narrowed and caught in an expression that was caught between horror and disgust as she examined their bodies from her standing position. The death of any pokemon was a tragic thing to her, and her pokemon even moreso. However, she had to maintain a professional air before Ruby. No, not just Ruby…everybody else.
She swallowed back the stammer that attempted to rise in her voice. ”…Kip, return.” Pulling a Net Ball off her belt, she returned the tiny Mudkip to safety at her hips. ”You want to keep the peace that has only just started to return to this town, right, Ruby?” she asked him quietly.

Ruby told the girl after hearing her opinions on the town all the while Nexio nodded silently understanding. For a second all was well, he'd been having a pretty good day. Sapphire hadn't been too wild this morning he was able to help the daycare couple out, and he was about to help with some reconstruction.
But like all good things nowadays, This happiness was short lived. Alyssa stopped walking suddenly a bit shaken. Ruby stopped as she did wondering what was up. "Are we He-.." Ruby looked over the girls shoulder and saw two.. deceased pokemon battered and burned this obviously wasn't an accident. Ruby pulled his hat down a bit and called Nexio to his side. By the girls reaction he figured they were probably hers.
Nexio upon seeing the pokemon and seeing the look on his trainers face was filled with rage, as was Ruby himself. It was then Alyssa started speaking once again keeping her calm completely. If this was difficult for Ruby then it must have been excruciatingly painful for her. She asked him if he wanted to keep the peace of the town where he responded with one word.
"Who."
The word was more a order than a question. Someone in this town had to dislike her if they were to go this far. She said she knew almost everyone so she must have had some idea. Nexio growled growing more irritated by the seconds. "Nex, go." The pokemon understood what Ruby meant exactly and went to pick up the Mawile in his arms as Ruby did the same for Baltoy. The pokemon was hot and he could feel a bit of electricity pulse through him, but he'd give these pokemon a proper burial despite the pain he felt. He wouldn't turn and face the girl as he didn't want to have to show her the deceased pokemon again.
All that was left was for the girl to answer his question.

The mind of Hoenn’s Leader picked up from the leisurely pace it had been set at, racing through a list of possible reasons, catalysts, and suspects. The list instantly narrowed from every citizen in the tiny town to two. Two that had promised her shortly after the war started that she was no longer welcome in her hometown. She had expected a bit of courtesy compared to this, perhaps a face-to-face confrontation and then devastating action like this. Not the other way around.
Alyssa felt her lip curl despite the fact she was biting down hard upon it. Her gloved fist clenched by her side and she felt her arm shaking with the tension. Now Ruby was in danger in addition to his Sceptile. Although she trusted her suspects enough not to heartlessly kill a person as coldly as they had the pokemon, she knew people could change – especially during a time of war. Years ago, they wouldn’t have harmed any pokemon, being a pair of breeders, but clearly that was different…unless it was just the fact they were hers.
”Allow me to apologize…” she murmured quietly, watching the Sceptile leave with her Mawile and Baltoy in its arms to bury. ”…I’ve put you in danger.” Turning to face him, she looked up into his red eyes, silent gratitude for the order to bury her pokemon evident in her gaze. She wouldn’t be able to do so again easily. Alyssa relaxed her expression, forcing herself to maintain a calm, serious air. ”Innocent bystanders and others should be safe, but now you and I are targets. You simply because youre this close to me. Me because I’m the target.”
She turned back around, only to the sound of gunfire (twice, to be exact), accompanied moments later by a sharp pain registering across the outside of her left shoulder.
”Get down..!”
The words were out of her mouth as quickly as she took action, spinning on her heel and extending her right arm to plow into Ruby. Sure, it would hurt him then and upon impact with the ground would only add to it, but it was a hell of a lot better than getting shot and possibly killed. Her action was a full-body tackle, his height compared to hers putting the arm against his upper ribcage as she drove both of them to the ground, pinning him behind the corner of the house along with herself sheltering behind the building’s wall. They would need to move soon.
”Ruby, meet my parents.”
Her words were short and cold. She couldn’t afford to show any leeway in the seriousness of her next actions. She would need to get both him and his Sceptile out of here. His pokemon would be safe, she was almost sure of that much, but as for him, she couldn’t be positive.
She knew her father had no background with a gun, but there was no telling what sort of second life her mother may have had behind the mask of a Pokemon Breeder. Looking up, she began to look through the crowd for the guerillas she knew had accompanied her. They would be able to handle the situation and allow herself and Ruby to escape quickly.

The neatly black hair stayed tucked and brushed all sav one particular the strand which popped straight up. The boy’s anger at this point was visible and as he looked down over his fallen comrade her shoulder was bleeding, obviously there was gunfire. He’d treat the wound himself on the spot, but there was there was neither the materials nor the time.
“Alyssa can you move, was it a direct hit?” He asked quickly. Still fearing more gunfire ruby grabbed a second Pokeball of his belt. “Sentigo block us.” Out of the pokeball came an almost brooding blue titan. The pokemon more than capable of taking a few gunshots due to its materials bent over and acted as shield.
Now the boy had a serious decision to make. He could either stay and fight, or he could run away with Alyssa. As much as he wanted to stay and take out whoever had done this he knew protecting Alyssa was more important. Luckily the Golurk didn’t only serve as a shield. He was also an expert flyer.
“Alright Alyssa you’re gonna have to be brave for me, alright?” The young man would grab his hat which wasn’t too far away now dirty band tuck it in his pocket. A bit clumsily, but hey he had bigger things to worry about at this point. “Can you walk?” If she said no he’d pick her up bridal style before speaking again. “I can use Sentigo to get us outta here is there anything you need to pick up?”
While Ruby was helping Alyssa, Nexio who was carrying the two pokemon now as Ruby had to let one down to help Alyssa was using Sentigo as cover as well taking any chances he had to search for where the bullets were coming from.

Her mind ran through a list of things she should, or better yet could do. Protect civilians. That was towards the top of her list. Protect Ruby. That was practically first seeing as he was in more immediate danger. Get Ruby out of there, and herself as possible. That was also an option that she would like (very much so) to take. They were covered, but only temporarily. Being towards the back of the middle section of the town, Alyssa sent rushed thanks to Arceus that their position couldn't be any better. The rest of the town behind them, from the direction the gunfire had come, had yet to be subjected to the starts of reconstruction.
It's a gamble, but we need to move forward towards the crowd. Alyssa glanced down at Ruby. Despite the situation they were in, his appearance caught her slightly off-guard. Holy shit, she thought, preventing the slight surprise from showing on her face. It's a hat. She would have to revel in that later. "I'm okay, Ruby..." she murmured, answering his worried question after he send out the pokemon acting as a massive sheild behind them.
The way he talked to her registered in her mind similarly to how someone would comfort a small child. Although it wasn't necessarily how Alyssa imagined she'd be talked to again, she found it somewhat endearing. She also saw it as a positive flair in his personality as far as protecting others went. "I can move...'m fine. Keep your pokemon there for the time being, return your Sceptile when you can then the other one."
She pushed herself up with her right arm, careful to avoid applying much pressure to her shoulder, which was staining her shirt red. Don't think about it. Standing up, she stepped forward cautiously towards the opposite end of the house. Leaning forward slightly to look around it, the flowerpot near her head shattered after the sound of gunfire, a bullet missing its target and hitting the clay pot.
A frightened yell from a civilian jolted everybody out of the calm quiet more than the gunshots had. The guerillas in the area automatically looked up and all drew their pokeballs. Their heads turned rapidly and Alyssa knew they were looking for someone to hand them orders.
"Guerillas!" she shouted, drawing their attention.
"Half of you escort others to safety, the other half of you persue the attackers! If you are able to apprehend them, arrest them and disarm them. Do not kill them! They're wanted for questioning! Go!"
The guerillas dispersed immediately, some drawing the pistols they'd managed to attain as they rushed forward, past the house where Alyssa and Ruby were. Others herded citizens out of the range of fire. Multiple gunshots echoed on the other side of the house, more than simply the two from the attackers and the others from the Guerillas.
Reinforcements.
Turning back to Ruby, she spoke more urgently. "The Guerillas know what to do, they'll cover our escape." Alyssa pulled a Timer Ball from her belt and expanded it in her palm before letting it drop to the ground, revealing the Flygon that stayed within it. "When you are able to safely move to return your pokemon, get on Flygon's back. I'm not far behind you."
She needed to confirm the identities of their attackers. One way or another.

Ruby was relieved when the girl told him she was ok. Alyssa started throwing out of orders in the general area to some of the arriving crowd most likely wondering what in the hell was going on exactly.” Seems like she didn’t come alone.” |
[/color] He didn’t know how many operatives she brought with her, but they were apparently enough for the two of them to make a getaway. Ruby knew he needed to treat the girl and the best way to do that right now was to listen to her orders as her Guerillas did. “Nex!” He called to the pokemon loudly who within a second was next to his trainer. “I’ll handle these two alright?” The pokemon nodded grudgingly and handed Ruby the two carcasses. He wouldn’t give these two up even if it killed him. Sceptile then hit the pokeball on Ruby’s belt and returned to it himself, knowing it wasn’t the time to argue. “You seem pretty certain, let’s hope they get the job done.” Ruby confirmed and as she ordered he got on the Flygon Ruby let down one of the fallen pokemon in such a way it wouldn’t fall off the dragon due to his legs acting as boundaries and grabbed Sentigo’s pokeball. Once Alyssa got on he’d recall the pokemon and hopefully the two would be on their way with little resistance. Ruby grimaced, how had such a good day gone bad so quickly? While waiting for Alyssa to get on he called out to the Golurk. “Sent how are you holding up!” He called over the gunfire almost screaming. The pokemon let out a low healthy bellow which Ruby assumed was something along the lines of, “I’m fine, but could you please hurry up these bullets aren’t pleasant.”“C’mon Alyssa, you sure you don’t need any help?” He called worriedly if she took much longer he’d call the large golem over itself to get the girl out of the area. Flygon shifted slightly beneath Ruby when he hopped up on the Mystic Pokemon’s back. The red-lensed eyes of her dragon turned, looking behind him for his trainer. The green pokemon shifted uncomfortably, the sounds of gunfire causing his antenna to twitch with discomfort. Alyssa, meanwhile, had made her way to the front of the house without getting shot, and into the cover of a pile of building materials. She didn’t even need to attempt to get the attention of the Guerilla soldier she had wanted to speak to in the first place; he came over as soon as he saw her out in the open.
Hearing Ruby’s echoed voice from around the corner of the house over the exchanging gunfire between sides, she rushed her orders to the Guerilla. ”Like stated before, avoid killing them disarm to arrest. I will deal with them at a later date. Place every one of them in holding. How many are there?” her question was met with a number, ‘fifteen’. Alyssa bit her lip. That wasn’t good, if any more came they would be easily outnumbered. ”How things are going it looks like we’ll have a shoot-out on our hands for some time.” She peered around the pile of building materials. ”I’m their main target, so things should let up, but do not let your guard down until they are apprehended.”
The Guerilla nodded and Alyssa handed him a card that had her phone number printed upon it. ”Text me updates as soon as possible, be it good or bad. My further action will be decided upon your update.” Another nod met her words and Alyssa mirrored it, standing for a moment and rushing back to the side of the house. A bullet clipped the brick above her head, causing her to duck immediately, a hand on the back of her head as she looked at who had fired.
Hoenn’s Leader felt her stomach flip at the sight of long black hair and blue eyes behind extended arms and a smoking pistol in hand. …Mom… Alyssa moved instinctively, her legs pushing her around the corner of the house again as her mother was distracted by one of her daughter’s Guerillas, giving Alyssa time to get out of range.
Alyssa jumped up on Flygon’s back behind Ruby as soon as she could, using the crouched pokemon’s bent leg as something of a step stool. Wrapping her uninjured arm around Ruby’s waist to secure both of them, she leaned forward slightly so Flygon could hear her without her having to yell.
”Let’s fly, Flygon. Meteor Falls. You know where.”
She glanced at Ruby as Flygon unfolded his wings. ”Call back your pokemon, we’re going.”
As soon as Ruby’s pokemon was returned to its ball, Flygon zipped through the air, away from Verdanturf and to Meteor Falls.
