A few days after Nox loses Sootopolis to Lux
Alyssa clenched her fists and felt her body begin to shake. If she tensed much more, the cell phone in her right hand would most likely break. Her teeth ground together quietly and her jaw trembled. Ever since she first received word of the loss at Sootopolis, she had felt sick – not physically, but mentally and almost emotionally. She felt disappointment, frustration, anger, and a bitter sense of failure at no person other than herself. Hoenn’s Leader. A humiliating defeat to Lux at Sootopolis...what kind of ‘Leader’ did that make her? In her home Region too. ”Why...?” she asked the empty Shoal Cave, her voice scarcely heard over the splashing, low-tide water. It was eight o’clock in the evening, and the tide would be coming in soon. ”Why?!” she shouted, looking up into the dark, shadowed ceiling of the cavern.
The sand beneath her feet crunched as her weight shifted and she jumped off the ledge on which she’d been standing, pacing furiously back and forth as though she would burn to death if she stood in one place. ”I wasn’t here...Lux’s president was, though.” She chewed the inside of her lip, and felt the gazes of her pokemon burning into her as they stared at their trainer, lost as to know what to do. It had been a long while since they’d seen her in a fit like this. ”I could have stopped the seige...that complete, and utter loss.” she kicked the deposits of Shoal Salt that were sitting in her path, sending the mineral flying. She didn’t need to worry about it, though, within two tide cycles it would be re-deposited. ”We were thrashed as though we didn’t stand a chance, as though Nox showed no resistance!”
The Veteran Trainer closed her phone and put it in her pocket lest she break it as she felt the furstration that had been building for the past few days threatening to fly from her chest as words through her mouth. ”Nox should have been there! They should have put up more of a fight! Did they just let Lux walk all over them?!” she picked up a Shoal Shell that had been left washed up from the last high tide and hurled it against the side of the Cave, shattering the delicate object as it collided.
”I should have been there!” she shouted into the nothingness, hearing her voice echo within the caverns. ”What sort of ‘Leader’ am I?!” she questioned herself furiously. ”If Hoenn’s own Leader wasn’t there to defend a City – not to mention one containing something sacred like the Cave of Origin – what are they?!” She ground her teeth and shook her head vigorously, shutting her eyes. ”I should have been there!” she repeated angrily, her voice hardening. ”I could have helped! I could have driven Lux forces back! I should have been there to lead! “
She kicked another pile of Shoal Salt.
”Sootopolis would not have been lost if I hadn’t agreed to be Platinum’s hostage for that week, I could have been!” She slammed the side of her fist against the rocky wall, gritting her teeth at the pain that shot through her hand and arm. ”I was torn by my duties! Being her hostage for that week would help much-needed goods and medicine get from Cianwood to Olivine!”
She felt as though she were explaining herself. But to what? To whom? Nobody.
Her voice dropped as the initial flash of anger subsided into regret and shame. ”....what kind of Leader am I if I let myself get torn by my duties so easily? If I let issues from the past interfere with the present? I could have just assigned – no...” she shook her head. ”Platinum would only have accepted me as a hostage...” A thought entered her mind. ”D...did Platinum do it on purpose?” her eyes widened slightly at the idea, ”...did Platinum know they would attack Sootopolis then? That taking me as her hostage then would allow a part of Hoenn - my home – to be taken?”
She sank to her knees on the damp sand, the horror of the thought filling her. ”N-no...” she didn’t want to believe it. ”Platinum...she wouldn’t have done that to me....would she have?” Alyssa felt her jaw trembling somewhat, both from the anger still within her and the chills washing over her from the cold air of the cave. ”.....why Sootopolis....” she murmured, staring at the ground.
”How am I supposed to lead?!” she yelled, sitting back sharply and turning her face upwards towards the ceiling. ”I’m not a born leader!!” It was the truth, she was not someone who was born or raised to lead. She had ambition that could drive her when channeled properly, but until it was channeled she would be guided by her instincts. ”Show me! What should I be doing?! What am I doing wrong?! What can I do better?! Something!” her voice died slightly. ”Anything..”
Her ears rang with the echos racing through the cave, and the only other sound besides the water was her panting breath.

As much as the adolescent disliked caves he long ago recognized that they were the best places to train in solitude, he even heard that mighty Red spent his time training in a mountain cave somewhere in Kanto. Upon entering this area of the cave one would see the white haired boy spring off a wall and kick a Rhyperior who would block to attack with his gigantic stone arm. The clash would echo for a moment before the boy would twist off of the gargantuan pokemon propelling him back and then he’d land carefully on the icy ground. He had chosen to train in the deepest coldest part of the cave for a reason. These conditions were the harshest he could find in this area and most likely this region.
“Thanks for the help Rhy, I’m gonna take a quick break.” The ground type pokemon grunted accepting the thanks, and then went to train with another of the boy’s pokemon, Bai as he was the only other pokemon Nexus had anywhere near Rhy’s Weight Class. The two began to grapple on the ice pushing each other, both of them trying to find some kind of traction to support themselves. Coming from Orre his pokemon rarely fought in conditions such as these, even on his gym run icy terrain only came into play once or twice.
His other pokemon were out as well training in the icy cavern. Psy and Kai were enacting their normal training program. Psy would teleport around and it was Kai’s job to hit Psy. This increased Kai’s speed and Psy’s reaction time, and since they trained on ice it increased their knowledge of what they could and could not do on ice. Lai and Tai were training around the entrance of the cavern, Lai would launch her swift attack and Tai would block it with discharge while climbing the icy wall. Nexus smiled looking at all of his pokemon for a moment before hearing echoes of anger and sadness coming from a different part of the cave. What was going on?
“Psy, Kai, Rhy come with me, the rest of you listen for my call.” Nexus recalled Rhy and Kai to their pokeballs and Psy would use its psychic powers to levitate, and follow Nexus as he ran. The two quickly made their way through the higher levels of the cave following the angry feminine voice while, slowly beginning to understand her words as the duo got closer. Until finally they could hear her voice at its max volume as she was right below them. As Nexus arrived he sat down over the edge of the rock wall preparing to slide down, but decided not to as that would interrupt the venting female. So he just sat, and waited for the troubled woman to finish.
“Well I guess a good start would be calming down a bit, wouldn’t you say?”
Psy who sat next to Nexus nodded its head before flying up and levitating above the adolescent once again. According to her monologue she was a Nox operative, and a high ranking one at that. She looked slightly familiar, but Nexus couldn’t remember where he saw her. Could it have been when the boy did his gym run so long ago? No one that innocent looking would be caught dead in The Under. So he decided to cross that option out, before dropping the topic completely as it didn’t matter where he saw her. What mattered was that she was here now, and she had his attention.

Alyssa stiffened immediately at the sound of another voice and inhaled sharply, the burst of sea air driving through her lungs like an arrow. There was somebody else here? Why? Who the hell came to Shoal Cave? People wanting to train… she told herself, not that she’d really needed to ask in the first place. She’d practically isolated herself in Meteor Falls not too many years ago for an extensive, painful, and tiring dose of training to prepare for the Elite Four and Champion challenges that awaited her. Needless to say, the war had put those goals on hold indefinitely.
Alyssa pushed herself up and spun around to face the source of the voice, the two ponytails at the base of her skull into which she’d tied her long white hair fell against her sides, and she sheepishly straightened the red beanie on her head, rumpling the bangs that stuck out above the bridge of her nose between her eyes. Some example she’d just set – Hoenn’s Leader raging to an empty cave, throwing objects so they shattered, and venting pent-up anger so her terrible temper didn’t snap at the wrong moment at an unfortunate victim.
She heard a muted shuffling behind her as her pokemon moved from their spot on raised ground to come behind her, all six of them grouping behind her. They, too, had heard and seen the new arrival and came to protect their trainer or battle as instructed. The Veteran Trainer swallowed her anger, sadness, and guilt at once, forcing it back although she’d opened a valve that didn’t shut off too easily. More likely than not, she would continue to work it out of her system after this brief encounter passed.
With a stroke of luck, however, this encounter would calm the storm raging within the Leader’s body.
Taking a deep breath to steady her voice, Alyssa swallowed before speaking.
”Yeah, it probably would be.” she said, agreeing with him and keeping her voice level, but loud enough to be heard at his greater elevation. ”Smartest course of action too - for the sake of the cave more than my own.” She allowed a bit of a sheepish grin to make its way across her face when she glanced at the shattered Shoal Shells a distance off.
Silence sat between them for a moment before she decided to continue.
”I didn’t necessarily expect someone else to be here.”

He laughed a bit louder at his own joke starting a minor echo, which could barely be heard over the waves crashing against the cave shore. Nexus was actually surprised the cave was this empty himself, "I guess the days were people spent their time training themselves ended with this war." |
Nexus sighed to himself for a moment before the girl continued. Nexus grinned slightly, "Heh, sorry for interrupting then, but I don't think you should worry about it. Everyone has to release sometime right?" Nexus remembered a few times in The Under when he needed to vent himself. Nexus honed in on a certain week in particular where he started a losing streak after a devastating loss to the Deep King. Through a great deal of anger, and a thorough ass kicking by his only friend in The Under he was able to recover. The female was obviously uncomfortable and a bit disheartened and Nexus couldn't blame her, after all if someone walked in while he was venting he'd be pretty awkward as well. He recalled that week one last time. Maybe he could help her out a little and get a little bit of training out of it himself. The adolescent looked the female over once more, seeing as she was a leader she should be strong, but she didn't really look it. In a way she looked a bit too... Innocent. No, thinking like that was wrong. Nexus knew better to judge a book by its cover, hell he was most likely put in the same category as her in that sense. Due to his age people often looked down on him as well, and there was nothing he hated more than being underestimated. That being said Nexus would not underestimate the girl. His grin turned into a semi- wide smile. "You seem a bit dejected and I need a bit of training, you up for a quick match? It'll help you get your mind off of things." The boy stopped for a moment giving the woman a chance to consider it. "Oh and don't worry about your venting. I wont tell anyone, not that I have anyone to tell." Nexus grabbed a pokeball off of his belt and enlarged it. "So you up for it?" He then slid down the rock wall. Dirt, rocks, and dust flew all around him until finally he made it to the bottom. He decided he'd worry about getting back up to his other Pokemon later, for now he focused on the task at hand. 458 [/style][style=background-image: url(http://i56.tinypic.com/vy86mw.png); padding: 8px 20px 8px 10px; width: 400px; font-family: verdana; font-size: 9px; line-height: 10px; color: #efefef; text-align: justify;] MUSE: Avatar the Last Airbender WORDS: 458 NOTES: My muses are strange =_= [/style][style=background-image: url(http://i.imgur.com/XcgTi.png); height: 25px; padding: 5px; width: 420px; -moz-border-radius-bottomleft: 30px; -moz-border-radius-bottomright: 30px; border-radius: 0px 0px 30px 30px; border-top: #606569 8px solid; font-size: 9px; text-align: center; color: #636363;]made by ayu of back to neverland [/style]

A small grin tugged at her lips and she couldn’t help but agree with him. At some point in time, everybody needed to vent one way or another. Keeping anger pent up within them wasn’t ideal – it led to stress, irrational judgment, and more undesirable effects. Despite the fact it was in her nature to shut something such as anger and rage up to prevent it from being witnessed by others, she had intentionally released the thoughts and feelings in what she thought was the privacy of Shoal Cave. Clearly she was wrong, though.
So long as he isn’t foolish enough to attack me where I stand things should go pretty smoothly… she thought, putting her hands in her pockets after his pause, her eyes widening in a bit of surprise. He was challenging her to a match? That was something she had expected the least. A pokemon battle? Here? Surely he was joking? The everyday sort of pokemon battle one would see in Colosseums or on the Routes of a Region seemed obsolete now that the war had taken hold. Hoenn’s Leader couldn’t believe he was for real.
”Are you serious?” she asked when he slid down to the bottom of the rock wall he’d just been sitting upon. She let the disbelief sit in her eyes long enough in her eyes for him to notice it, though she remained rooted to the spot. ”The war has changed the way trainers battle. Instead of a friendly battle between rivals and pokemon to gain experience as well as proving themselves to others, people and pokemon have become acclimated to fight viciously, as though on the front lines of battle.”
She frowned slightly before continuing.
”I have a feeling the sort of battle you’re offering me is a traditional one from times of old.”
…that sounded strange coming from me. she though, pushing it aside moments later to continue.
”And I will accept your challenge if that is, in fact, what you mean. I see enough vicious fights on the front lines…” although she’d only fought on the front lines of one battle so far, her statement was still valid. ”…and I don’t wish to see it here. What say you?”

He rubbed the back of his head ruffling his oddly colored hair. “But you have the right idea, a good old fashioned battle.” Had he been away so long that the outside world’s battles had become so similar to battles of the Under? Nah no way the world couldn’t have gotten that bad, but what the woman spoke of seemed pretty similar. He would have to reacquaint himself with this new world if it indeed existed as she implied. He couldn’t deny this completely as he noticed subtle changes upon entering the region and traveling a little himself. It was obvious the world had changed, but to this extent?
In the back of his mind he was still trying to figure out who this person exactly was, until finally he decided to ask out right who she was. “So stranger, you have a name?” He asked preparing a different pokeball seeing as she accepted his challenge. “Oh, and your right we’ll play fairly. The way battles were meant to be fought. In the way all participating can only grow from the skirmish, not to hurt or even kill each other, but to have fun alright?”
The girl still seemed slightly wary of Nexus though, “C’mon lighten up a bit. Is it really that hard to believe? We’re both trainers right? Even in this time we can still battle.” With that being said Nexus threw out his first pokeball halfway between the girl and Nexus himself. The pokeball landed and instantly a white light exploded and a reindeer like creature formed. Kai growled obviously ready for a battle, already in the zone due to the training he had been participating in not so long ago. “So you ready or what? Fair warning just cause you’re a girl doesn’t mean I’ll go easy on you!” He smiled ready to see the girl’s battle potential, as well as showing the fruit of his intense training program. For the first time since her rage within Shoal Cave began, a smile split on Alyssa’s lips when he confirmed that they would, in fact, be having a ‘good old-fashioned’ pokemon battle. Relief spread through her. With the war having raged here in Hoenn only a short time ago she didn’t want to do anything that even vaguely resembled war. It was one thing to fight in the war when it happened, but it was another thing entirely to act as though it was when it was not. By means of that – it was against Alyssa’s will to fight as though she were battling on the front lines when she was not.
”…No need to call me stranger.” she told him, deciding revealing her name was fine. She had strong members of her team with her at the moment, if this erupted into something more than the promised traditional battle she would be ready to fight back and escape as needed. ”My name is Alyssa. Alyssa Akiyama. Seeing as you had to ask I’m going to assume you’re not from this region?” she inquired curiously. It was always interesting to see people from other regions and hear what they had to say, but that would have to wait until afterward.
”You’re right. Let’s begin." Nodding to her pokemon beside her, her Blaziken strode forward, her long legs carrying her to face the unfamiliar pokemon. Given that it did not register immediately in Alyssa’s mind, she assumed it was from Unova. No telling what type it was though. Its appearance had no tell-tale signs to hint her towards its type.
”Before we start, though, it’s only fair of me to ask your name as well.”
It was an invitation, and although it was not required that he take it, she would appreciate it.

“You know the drill, Go!” The pokemon immediately ran around almost stampeding around the cave but positioning itself for his attack. All the while Nexus kept his eyes on Blaziken and the trainer completely unfazed by the sounds as he was used to them. He had practiced and preformed this technique too many times for it to startle him in the slightest.
“As for my name, Well I’m no one important, just a nameless traveling trainer.” I grinned at the girl, “Anyways it’s about time, Kai Faint Attack.“ All the clomping stopped and the cave was left silence once again. The properties of faint attack made it so that Kai would attack almost of would attack almost silently from the direction in which he was closest to Blaziken, not to mention the Camouflage made him almost invisible to everyone and everything in this area of the cave. The camouflage would wear off after the attack upon returning to Nexus. The Young trainer smiled he hadn’t had a real battle in a while and fighting against a region leader was definitely a good start. To him this couldn’t get any more perfect, and hey helping someone out in a time that they probably needed it wasn’t too bad either. “Alright let’s see if you can keep up Alyssa!” [/style][style=background-image: url(http://i56.tinypic.com/vy86mw.png); padding: 8px 20px 8px 10px; width: 400px; font-family: verdana; font-size: 9px; line-height: 10px; color: #efefef; text-align: justify;]MUSE: I'm so very late WORDS: 348 NOTES: the amount of late.(Forgivvve meee) [/style][style=background-image: url(http://i.imgur.com/XcgTi.png); height: 25px; padding: 5px; width: 420px; -moz-border-radius-bottomleft: 30px; -moz-border-radius-bottomright: 30px; border-radius: 0px 0px 30px 30px; border-top: #606569 8px solid; font-size: 9px; text-align: center; color: #636363;]made by ayu of back to neverland [/style]

Camoflage, huh? That was an interesting move choice to start out with, although it made some sense. The longer she thought about it rather than briefly moments ago, Alyssa recalled through her short time in Unova that the deer-like pokemon before her was part Grass-type. A natural weakness against a powerful Fire-type pokemon like the Blaziken that now stood before its trainer, her long legs bent and fists raised, claws bared and ready to be used in attack. ”An interesting move.” she commented as the pokemon practically blended into its surroundings and moved. ”That move hasn’t been used against me for a while. I’m surprised you have.”
Alyssa couldn’t help but smirk a little as her eyes locked on Blaziken. The Blaze Pokemon’s narrowed eyes stayed watching the direction the sounds came from. Slight as they were, it was enough for Blaziken to hear, and further she was able to sense her surroundings. Like all pokemon in-tune with their environment, she could tell when something was amiss – or in this case, when another pokemon was going to attack her in battle. ”However, we’re in a cave at the moment, so that means your pokemon has become a Rock type!” Hoenn’s Leader smirked a bit. Faint Attack would not miss, but at the same time it would set up the enemy for a close-range counterattack.
Depending on the angle, it will be unavoidable!
”You know what to do, Blaziken!” Alyssa shouted, her eyes narrowing as she changed her stance to something that gave a more challenging, confident air. She was careful not to let that confidence turn into arrogance, but instead it kept her ready to accept any sort of challenge that came her way. ”Counter it! Close range, you’ve got this! Go!” Blaziken’s fists glowed blue and she stumbled to the side as the deer pokemon came seemingly out of nowhere and struck her.
In counter, Blaziken swung around, driving her two glowing fists at the pokemon, who was so close that Blaziken wouldn’t even need to extend her arms fully to give more than enough power behind the punch. ”Sky Uppercut!” she smirked a little before addressing her opponent. ”As tactical as move was, it only made things worse for your pokemon against a Sky Uppercut from a Blaziken!” Crossing her arms in a confident manner, she shook her head slightly. ”That’s a bit rude, don’t you think?” she asked, as though she were chiding him a bit. ”All I want to know is the name of who was brave enough to challenge me.”
