A Difference of Opinion
Alyssa stood straight with her arms crossed. It had been a long time since she’d had a traditional battle, and to be honest it was welcome relief from the usual battles she saw nowadays because of the war. Since it started, a normal battle between trainers on routes was a rare thing, despite how common it used to be. It used to be around every corner that you could see one – growing trainers aspiring to defeat each other in order to prove their abilities to their opponents and themselves.
Today’s battle had been like a blast from the past. However, it hadn’t been the same as when the Veteran Trainer – then no more than a rookie – had first ventured North on Hoenn’s Route 111. She’d been faced with more trainers than she could imagine, and it was almost as though she were struggling to get through every battle, despite the fact she’d just proved her ability by defeating Wattson. This was different, though. Sixteen years later, the route was practically empty. The raging sandstorms on the other side of the large rock formation from her could be heard, but besides that there was nothing.
Her challenger had been a break from the tense, unforgiving way she’d been forced to start battling because of the war, and it was welcome. Behind her stood Amon the Absol and Velda the Lucario. Before her, just returning from landing a finishing blow on the young woman’s pokemon was Blaziken. The backwards jump had placed the Blaze pokemon crouching just feet in front of her trainer, her arms crossed with readiness to battle although the opponent could clearly not go on. Behind her, Alyssa had a feeling that Amon and Velda were tensed as well, and she raised a hand somewhat to signal them to relax. ”It’s alright you three…” she told them. ”You did well.”
She’d only used the three of them in the fight, interchanging them as she pleased. Although switching her pokemon out every now and then wasn’t necessarily the style she went for with battles, sometimes it was a relief to have a change of pace. Blaziken, after a moment, relaxed, standing tall and looking at the opponent and her pokemon as Alyssa and the other two pokemon walked forward to form a straight line facing her.
”That was a good battle.” Alyssa said with a smile, placing her left hand atop Amon’s head and her right on Blaziken’s side. ”Actually, it’s something I’ve been looking forward to for some time now. If you want, I can heal your pokemon some…I’m no Pokemon Center but I do have some things that might help.”

Her confidence was great, her mood high and her spirits higher. Her Pokemon too shared her enthusiasm; they all knew they could do it. It'd be just like old days, when she was still young, still running around Unova with her assortment of bugs, looking for other trainers to battle. If she got stronger as a trainer, would she be able to challenge the gym leaders, the Elite Four, maybe even the Champion? Would they acknowledge her when she stood at the top at the region, forgive her for being a bad daughter?
Of course not. Those old hopes were shot down before she even had a chance. The gym challenge was gone, and though there were other ways to earn fame, it didn't matter when they were already dead, by her unknowing hand. In the end, this was all she'd ever amount to: just another speck in this world, biding her time.
Kiri kneels by her Ariados, a hand set lightly upon his unconscious body. The battle had been rather decisive, thanks to the opponent's advantage in both typing and experience. Even then, though, she had thought she could win, if maybe she just tried hard enough, or wanted it badly enough. What cost her the match? She can't think properly, can't set aside that growing agitation. It's the whole traditional battle format, right? Her team's not meant to fight by themselves; their style, their moves are built to work in tandem, after all. And the location? How the hell is she supposed to use the environment to her advantage if there's nothing here? Just charge on and attack the enemy directly? How stupid is that when the opponent's Pokemon are stronger than hers? What the hell was she supposed to do in this battle? What could she have done?
She's silent as she returns Tom to his Pokemon; she can't force niceties out, especially if he's not going to hear them anyway. There'll be time for that later, when she's calmed down. Quietly Kiri gets up, already beginning to walk away. She pauses at Alyssa's words, turning around to glare at the older woman. "Yeah," she says, halfheartedly. Her Pokemon need help, of course, but she's angry. She should accept, she knows. But she can't bring herself to. "Yeah, whatever. I don't need your fucking pity." |
She turns, walking away. "I can find help somewhere else."[/style]

Pulling Amon and Velda’s respective pokeballs from her belt, Alyssa expanded the containment devices in her hands, allowing the curve of the near-spheres fit into her grip. Pointing them at the correct pokemon, they retreated into the balls in a flash of red energy, their bodys illuminating for a brief time before they vanished completely. Only Blaziken was left standing beside her trainer as her teammates vanished, and she looked down at Alyssa.
Alyssa’s expression had lost the determined, narrow-eyed look that had come about in the battle. The thought of having a battle like ‘days of old’ as they seemed to be now had brought a wave of seriousness through Alyssa’s mind. It was just like when she was ten and striving to defeat all the Gyms, then again when she walked the routes for training in order to take on the Elite Four and Gym Leaders. Unlike most, she hadn’t barged right from the gyms of a region to Victory Road then Ever Grande, but instead taken her time and establishing more of a name for herself across the regions, not just limiting herself to one.
What she always looked for in opponents she defeated was something she saw now before her – the young woman expressing compassion for her pokemon with a hand lightly laid upon its red body. Although it was fainted, the trainer had still made a move to the companion in a gesture that registered in Alyssa’s mind as love. Love for one’s pokemon - the treatment that they were friends and companions rather than subordinates or tools used for battling – that was what she searched for most. She wanted to see the true hearts of her opponents, to know what their true intentions were relating to their pokemon. Just to fight for power? Or to seek experience?
...she sought experience, I hope... Alyssa told herself silently as she stayed silent and still a short distance off after her offer. The pokemon was returned to its pokeball and the young woman turned to leave without a word. Hoenn’s Leader blinked in surprise and began walking forward before halting when she was met with a glare from her opponent. The words rested on Alyssa’s shoulders like a weight, but she took no offense. Sure, she felt a flash of annoyance towards the trainer, but it was relatively minor compared to other post-battle reactions she’d gotten in her time.
Alyssa walked forward faster, half-jogging, even, for a few steps before she caught up to the younger female, pulling somewhat ahead of her and turning to face her. ”Would you rather risk getting caught with pokemon in a weakened state by another trainer, a wild pokemon, or without some sort of provisions in case the weather turns bad?” The Veteran Trainer narrowed her eyes slightly. The sky was relatively gloomy, and it looked like it would rain. ”If I pitied you or your pokemon, I would not have offered to heal them in the first place. Instead, I would have watched you leave without saying anything.”
Letting that sink in, Alyssa stood waiting for a response. She would do her best to help at least some of the younger woman’s pokemon however possible.

Alyssa chewed the inside of her lip as she listened to her former opponent. Clearly, the young woman wasn’t happy, and her mood showed no signs of improving. As much as I don’t want to stick around somebody in a terrible mood, I don’t want to just leave like some arrogant prat. She groaned inwardly and kicked herself to stay put, and hear the younger woman out. ”If something happens, and you lose your gun, you would be out of luck and at the mercy of whatever caused that series of events.”
Alyssa knew that following the girl as she moved might not be the most ideal thing to do in this situation, but Alyssa’s compulsion to do so was overwhelmed any possible common sense that may have been residing in her mind. ”Sorry, no can do...” the white-haired Veteran trainer murmured , stepping to the side to allow the young woman to pass before turning on her heel to follow her. Since she was the one responsible for causing the girl’s party to faint, she figured she had some sort of responsibility to see her through to Mauville, despite the fact she had a gun on her person.
