Fight and Flight Battle of Village Bridge - Round 3
Alyssa moved through the rubble that had been brought up by the Lux and Nox fighting forces with care, trying not to draw attention to herself as she moved. The fighting that had been raging around her was dying down. Nox had been losing, but now Lux and Nox seemed closer to evenly matched. Her last battle had been a closer call than she recalled having in years – for both herself and her pokemon. The trainer had not been hesitant to use a gun to threaten her or her pokemon, nor had he shown remorse at the loss of one of his pokemon at the hands of one of hers. I still need to bury it... she thought, and she had vowed to herself to bury the lost life if at all possible. Lux was forcing us back, but we stand more of a chance now. I just hope we succeed.
The burns on her arms and face screamed when she moved. The way her arms swung when she stepped pulled at the blistered skin on her upper arm, and any odd step she took sent tremors through her body and clawed at the charred skin on her face. I should get an aerial view of this battle... Walking through rubble and fallen pokemon and humans was pulling at her gut and twisting it into painful knots. I need to get away. Wrenching a ruby-colored Cherish Ball from her waist, she threw it into the air and caught it when it returned to her hand after releasing the fearsome beast within it.
By her side appeared Salamence, his stocky blue body close to the ground, and his blade-like red wings extended fully. Eyes closed, Alyssa could tell he was listening to the sounds around him. This was the first time she would use him for anything other than flying since Lance helped her tame him. ”Salamence...” his red eyes opened and he looked at her, his fierce gaze intimidating his own trainer. She did not quail out of fear, but more simply awe from the power she could see in his eyes, and now finally the respect he held for her at long last. ”...I need your help. Nox needs your help. Weavile was badly hurt in his last battle – he’s okay, but he won’t be fighting for a while. Flygon is okay, even though he was shot in the tail, and everybody else is fine. I need an aerial view of the sky and fight from there as needed. Can you help me?”
She held her proud pokemon’s gaze before he bowed his spiked head and lowered his wings, allowing her to climb upon his low back. Taking to the air and looking at the Bridge from three-and-one-half stories above, Alyssa’s throat tightened. People and pokemon lay everywhere, some dead, but most injured and moving slowly. Houses were on fire, only one of which she had caused, and the bridge was riddled with large cracks from her two Earthquakes. It still stood, but damage was evident. So long as I don’t use Earthquake again it should remain standing...
”Be careful, Salamence...” she told him, and she knew he acknowledged her words with a small turn of his head. ”I don’t want you getting harmed. The thick plates on your belly may offer some protection, but not total.”
If there were more Lux forces that dared to challenge her, she hoped they would accept her proposal of a simple pokemon battle, with no firearms. Come forward, if you wish...

He stood behind a makeshift barrier of sandbags, which wasn’t extremely comforting. They offered minimal protection without really giving any sort of advantage. They were just in the way, in his mind, but he couldn’t say he wasn’t glad to see them there.
Green eyes looked out on the expanse from behind those off white bags of protection. Everything was casting in harsh shadows, the setting sun beating down on him from behind. Golden rays illuminated facades and fronts, but everything behind was lost in shadows. Nox could be anywhere out there in the dusk, hiding in wait for when he turned his back. On guard, the wings flapping behind him gave him a relief that could only be described as overwhelming comfort.
Wings meant Fortis. Fortis meant barriers. Barriers meant cover. Cover meant protection. Protection meant this was ending. You never got protection in the heat of battle; it only came towards the end.
He turned around, scanning the air for the bird as it was approaching him. His eyes narrowed in anger when he noticed it was not his partner flying into the air. It was a large, blue dragon like creature with a rider. The red winged beast was not the source of his resentment, oh no, that came from the flowing, stark white hair billowing around the creature. Xander only knew of one person with that sort of bright colored hair, and she wasn’t a friend. He gripped a sphere on his belt tightly, anger flashing in him. How did she get passed him? Was she already on that side and just defeated an opponent? How much damage was she doing. Without Fortis to be his battling partner, Xander only had one that could even remotely do.
Red light flashed, the avian bursting into form and spreading her large wings out, stretching. She had been sleeping, “Time to fight, Avi.” He stated through gritted teeth, stepping closer to the Pidgeot, who looked over her shoulder at the sound of her trainer’s voice. A spark shot through her eyes as the thought processed in her mind, she trilled an excited note and flapped her wings. Xander smirked, grateful that he knew Avi was one to always be ready for a battle. No matter the opponent; she flew into battle fearlessly.
He climbed on board hastily, his anger fueling his body with vigor. They took the skies, and he didn’t wait for pleasantries. The bird charged forward, her tail feathers fluttering behind her, increasing her speed substantially with her Tailwind move. She continued her advance with a gust of air, slicing away at the back of the trainer and Salamance. The Air Slash rippled menacingly through the air. So much destruction. So much death. So much pain. Why is war like this…? she asked herself, gritting her teeth in a frown. Although she had to see everything in order to keep stalling Lux forces until Nox was able to get back in the game. Nox must prevail… she thought, gritting her teeth in displeasure at the thought of Lux claiming the first land in Unova. I will do everything in my power to prevent that from happening. she silently vowed, as though she had not earlier against her first opponent. Salamence growled slightly beneath her, his entire body shuddering with the intimidating sound as though he saw something before them. The muscles in his back tensed though he remained gliding through the air evenly, his razor-like wings keeping him and his trainer afloat.
The sound of air moving made Alyssa tense as well and she shifted her position to lock her arm securely around Salamence’s long neck. Her pokemon’s spiked head turned as hers did to look back and see what the sound was. Alyssa only saw a Pidgeot racing upwards through the air towards them before Salamence pumped his wings once and tilting his body downwards, dropping towards the ground at an alarming rate that made Alyssa’s stomach flip. It was only when she was below who she assumed would be her opponent that she saw thin discs of air racing by where they had just been, and would have been hit were it not for Salamence’s quick action. ”That was close…” she murmured, loud enough for her Dragon to hear, who seemed to nod in agreement.
His eyes had turned upward like hers, focusing in on their opponent and she knew he was waiting for a command. ”Dragon Dance…” she murmured, and he obliged. Twisting his body upright as he soared vertically through the air, Salamence waved from side to side as though riding a helix as he twisted around in the mystic dance to increase his speed and attacking power. …ugh. Too many of those and I’ll be glad for walking on the ground… she thought, shaking herself of the slight dizziness that had overcome her in their speedy ascent.
Now though, they halted temporarily though ready to move as necessary if things did not bode well. ”You should warn somebody first before you attack them…” the Veteran Trainer stated evenly, sizing her opponent up in her mind. ”…and I warn you now that if you don’t stand down I’ll engage with you in combat. However…” she paused, willing to try this offer a third time ”…for the sake of your pokemon as well as mine I ask that you subside to a traditional pokemon battle…no firearms involved.”
She knew the chances of his compliance were slim to none – this was war, after all – but she still offered in hopes that he would accept.

The rotating, circular discs sped past where the dragon and rider had been only seconds before. Green eyes darted down as they darted passed the area themselves, arcing to the left and away from the Nox soldier. He glared daggers in her direction, hatred and anger boiling inside the pit of his stomach, scorching any sense of honorable fights or merciful thoughts within him like a virus corrupting every cell in his being. It spread like wildfire, burning away at him quickly, consuming him, and tipping him over the edge. He directed Avi to circle around slowly, steadily. They turned in a crescent to look down at the other trainer, who was starting to rise once more from their sudden descent. Xander brought out his gun while she was some ways away; hoping that the setting darkness coupled with the distance would hide his movements. He held the gun in his lap, hidden behind the strong neck of his mount. She trilled out a condescending note at the other flying creature; disdain obvious in her body language. She disliked this waiting and not fighting; talking never got you anywhere. It was a waste of time in her warrior mind, but she knew Xander had a plan. He wasn’t going to let them lose so easily. Even if they were up against a Legendary Pokémon, Avi had full faith in Xander that he would get them out of it alive. Her mighty wings beat slowly to keep them aloft in the air as the two leveled over the bridge, which lay in ruin and death. Bodies were scattered around the expanse like rag dolls tossed aside when the toddler was tired of them. Lives lost, in great numbers, because Nox had to interfere. This was their entire fault. The earthquakes, Xander knew, had come from the enemy side. Lux had been ordered to not cause damage to the structure itself. Unless they completely disrespected his order, Nox caused the damage. Xander wasn’t going to let that slide so easily. Xander laughed out loud at the white haired lady, shaking his head, “A traditional battle?” He called out over the otherwise silent night. His voice was sure to carry easily through the starry sky. He smirked, sneering at the other, “You of all people should know that isn’t a possibility anymore!
Look below us, fool! You caused this! They died because of you! Innocent blood is stained on your hands, not mine. This destruction is not our fault! You’ve slain the innocent and yet you have the audacity to ask for a simple battle?”Xander shook his head, the anger in him swelling to a new high. He looked at her with a pained expression, the loss of lives were never a good thing in his eyes. It was a tragedy written in the book of this age. He hoped to add some sort of light to the dark tale. He brought his gun up as quickly as he could and shot it without warning. The bullet shot out at the other trainer. So much for talking, huh?

Alyssa groaned inwardly. She knew the hope of a Lux member complying were incredibly slim. Only her first comeptitor had been kind enough to acknowledge her request, quite possibly because she was one of the few remaining people that shared the same respect for pokemon and valued their lives. How low has Lux sunk... she thought with disgust, forcing herself not to close her mind to whatever else he was saying. Her instinct had driven her to attempt to shut him out, but she had enough courtesy to hear him out. His words angered her, but she managed to control herself with only closing her eyes and biting her lip.
Beneath her, she could feel Salamence’s body trembling beneath hers as he growled; the sound escaping through his teeth as he narrowed his eyes. The pathetic bird pokemon had trilled out a note that was supposed to offend him. As if a mere bird could intimidate him, a dragon. He would best that tenfold. This aerial match was something in which he would excell. He knew his strength and speed. There was no pokemon greater than him – the king of the skies.
”Do you think that I killed all of those people?!” she demanded seconds after he finished speaking. ”Do not pin all the blame on Nox! Lux is just as responsible for the casualties below! A child could tell you that!” Whether she was going to say more or not remained unknown, for her words were cut off by the sound of gunfire – something she hadnt gotten warning with the setting sun. Moments later, there was shock. A bullet had rocketed through the side of her arm, through the burns that were already there that Cecil had bandaged.
The shock of the bullet through her skin registered a silent reaction from her, but the vicious-natured Dragon pokemon beneath her roared in defiance, splitting the quiet air through the battlefield, overpowering the pathetic trill the bird had given and silencing the echo from the bullet. He surged upward in another Dragon Dance to get his trainer out of harms way, and Alyssa’s one arm was still wrapped around his neck.
The pain surging through her arm clotted in her brain for a moment, blocking out. ”S-Salamence...” she said, choking back her pain as they pulled out of the steep incline. ”A-are you okay?’ The dragon growled before giving another roar, his eyes glowing red in the night before it soon overtook his entire body. ”Oh Salamence, don’t...don’t...” her pokemon did not listen. He would fight this battle how he chose. Pulling the Timer Ball off of her belt, she released Flygon as Salamence prepared his attack.
”Just be careful. I love you.”
Her pokemon gave a slight nod of acknowledgement and waited. Salamence knew why his trainer had summoned another pokemon. ”Flygon, Rock Slide.” she commanded. The Flygon hovered where he was, and both pokemon were alert to avoid gunfire if they saw anything.
Flygon’s antennae glowed white and large boulders appeared in the air, white energy rippling through the air where the boulders appeared. Nodding slightly, Flygon dropped them, sending the rocks sailing through the air towards her opponent. The Mystic Pokemon raced after them, his maw opening as he released a follow-up torrent of fire in Flamethrower to chase after the rocks.
”Just wait, Salamence...” she told her dragon, his body trembling as he waited for a command to make his move.

The extra barriers never reached their designated area on the bridge. In retrospect, they did serve their purpose, but Xander was grateful for the unexpected help. Granted, the blonde sentinel knew his partner – his friend – would be back at some point; however, he had not expected him back so soon. Xander and Fortis trained together for many years now – they had been with one another almost since birth. Xander’s father had bought him the baby hatchling when he was four. The toddler version of Xander never went anywhere without Fortis, which has dad named for him. Back up in time slightly, Xander’s observant eyes watched as his bullet ate into Alyssa’s arm, hopefully handicapping her for the duration of the battle. Obviously, Xander had shot to kill, but the quick, quote on quote, point and shoot method he chose to use proved ineffective at best. Aiming was not his top priority by any means; however, he was regretting his prior, rash decision that probably stemmed from being atop his classically hasty creature. The girl opposite him in the air released a second dragon into this fight, raising the risks but raising the success rate of the fight at the same time. She now had the upper hand. Xander had to call her bet, though, throw in his chips so he didn’t seem like he was crumbling in the face of an unrelenting opponent. Yet, the blonde didn’t have a single bird in his remaining party that could fight against either of the dragons present. The best choice would probably be Malum, but he was rather infatuated with Avi thus would be ineffective in a battle alongside her. All of this to say, Xander’s overwhelming sense of relief was understandable when the bridge barriers never reached their designated area on the bridge. As the rockslide and flamethrower made their way towards Xander and Avi, a terrifying screech rent the air, disturbing the still night around them. Green eyes shot over to the source of the sound, and a smile broke out across Xander’s face. The moment of relief lasted all of two seconds before the giant eagle blocked the on coming rocks and flames with the metal slab. He shrieked again, showing paramount displeasure at the thought of his mate being attacked with such uneven odds. Anger that matched Xander’s filled the light body of the majestic avian, driving him forward. His talons clung to the top grips of the metal barrier as he rocketed forward, dragging it along with him in hopes of knocking the Flygon out of the air. He slung it as far as he could, let it drop after flying forward to the source of the flames. He turned around, spotted the Salamance in his peripheral vision. He dive-bombed once more, talons outstretched in front of him, gleaming in the moonlight. The Crush Claw attack was meant for Alyssa, not the Salamance. Take out the trainer to hinder the Pokémon. It was simple logic that Xander had taught his partner in crime.

A screech splitting the air called the attention of the three fighting for Nox, pulling their eyes away from their targets and looking into the sky. Even Flygon paused in his descent to look. The moon only gave them a bit of light, and Alyssa was only to make out the silhouette of a pokemon swooping in. Another one of her opponents?! He hadn’t released the bird, a large eagle-like pokemon. It’s from Unova….which one is it? Alyssa wondered briefly as she stayed rooted on Salamence’s back, the faint red outline that had overtaken his body growing slowly brighter, although it still remained dim. Easy… she silently urged her pokemon, watching the scene caused by the arrival of the eagle-like pokemon.
As soon as a metal sheet cut off his view from his opponent, Flygon’s torrent of flames ceased, darkening the night once more as he looked up to the new soldier entering the fray. His eyes were narrowed behind the protective red lenses and he let out a less-than-intimidating roar that almost sounded more like a screech of complaint to match the birds. The slab that had been used to deflect his Flamethrower and Rock Slide was dragged along towards him behind the pokemon, showing signs that it was slowing him down. Turning in the air, Flygon allowed himself to be hit by the metal, but due to his change in position it pounded against his flank and tail, as though a giant hand had taken the liberty of spanking his rear out of the sky and over the side of the bridge. The pain from the blow was nothing compared to the injured pride he felt to take a blow like that. It was better than enduring it head-on at any rate. Vanishing over the side of the bridge, he thought of the Battle of Olivine, and how he had used a situation similar to his advantage. If he could repeat that process, things would turn for the better.
”Flygon!” Alyssa’s worried shout echoed through the air as she saw her green Mystic pokemon vanish from her sight over the side of the damaged bridge, and she narrowed her eyes angrily. Pokemon using their surroundings to their advantage – although she saw nothing wrong with that in the greater respect of things, the use of anything but the Pokémon’s trained and Arceus-given power was a disgusting advantage in battle that sickened Alyssa. It was something that reminded her of bringing a weapon to a fist fight. She felt Salamence shudder beneath her and was snapped back to reality, but what proved to be too late.
Salamence’s body dropped seconds after it shuddered, and Alyssa only saw the glint of claws before ducking down slightly, bending her head and protecting her neck with her good arm. Claws scored across the back of her left shoulder before leaving five-inch-long claw marks in her skin. The pain that erupted from her shoulder was nothing compared to the shock of the fall. The momentum of the pokemon’s attack carried her off the back of her Salamence, plunging towards the dark water below.
A sound comparable to a scream of shock left her lungs as she fell blindly through the air. She only brought an arm in front of her face, seeing a rock fall into the water before her, splitting it for her impact before she, too, was submerged completely in the water, pain splitting from her left side. First shot in the left arm, then getting claws raked across the back of her left shoulder, and dropped in near-freezing water. The shock of the pain and temperature of the water rendered Hoenn’s Leader still and unmoving beneath the surface.
The blue Dragon Pokemon wasted no time in moving after his trainer was torn from his back. A savage roar ripped from his jaws, splitting the silence of the night and echoing in the sky as the red aura around him blazed like a fire. Narrowing his eyes, he turned on a dime and soared after the bird that had picked his trainer off of him, using his increased speed to rapidly close the short distance between them. A vicious and merciless pokemon by nature, he would show no restraint in this Outrage, and he positioned himself to slam into the side of the mere bird pokemon from behind, his increased attack power hopefully proving enough to wrench its wing forward to sprain it or worse. Jaws open, he would fight tooth and claw in this as well.
Alyssa was snapped out of her shock when she felt something brush against her injured arm. She couldn’t see anything – it was too dark. She felt it again, this time against the backs of her legs before in front of her. It was a pokemon – a big one too. It fit the curve of its body against her torso and swam up towards the surface. Her free arm reached blindly against the pokemon for something to hold, and the smooth, rounded top gave her a hint as to what it was, then she confirmed her guess when she grabbed a wide pectoral flipper to keep herself balanced. A Wailmer…
They broke the surface of the water in the shadow of the bridge, and Alyssa inhaled sharply, cold air hitting her lungs like a kick in the gut. Her first instinct was to rip a Dive Ball from her belt and release the Kingdra within. He appeared beside her. ”K-King…” she stammered through chattering teeth, placing the ball upon her belt. ”F-flying pokemon, f-far above. We n-need range.” The Kingdra studied her for a moment before vanishing beneath the water as his trainer was pulled to floating rubble upon the Ball Whale pokemon. Practically sliding off of the whale, Alyssa raised her hand and placed it on the pokemon’s nose. ”T-thank Arceus for y-you…” she chattered, ”…and thank y-you. Very m-much.”
The playful pokemon nodded before bumping the platform she was on with its nose, sending it floating onto the bank beneath the bridge. Vanishing beneath the waves, Alyssa had a feeling it would be sticking, around despite her hope that it would not. Glancing up, the white-haired Veteran Trainer saw her Flygon and gestured to him. ”Come here…” She needed to get warm or dry lest she get rather sick. However, she saw neither happening in the near future. With the approach of her pokemon, Alyssa began to re-think her strategy.
A short distance off, King poked his head silently above water and turned to look in the sky. Salamence took off out of his view with full intent of attacking whatever, and turning to the right allowed Kingdra to see his target – a trainer and the bird pokemon it was mounted upon. Taking aim down his long snout, the Dragon pokemon reared back his head, a blue-white ball of energy forming at the tip before he thrust his neck forward, firing a powerful blast of Ice Beam, the blue-white rays of energy crackling like electricity as they raced jaggedly through the sky for the backs and underbelly of the opponents. He may not have been able to fly or stand upon land, but he could fire ranged shots as effectively as a gun.

Fortis raged across the night sky, launching the metal barrier throw the air. The metal whizzed, air circling around it causing sound to vibrate away as it shot through the air. The not-so-comfortable sheet slammed into the retreating Flygon, knocking the mystic green dragon into the depths of the darkness surrounding them. Immediately, Fortis crested around, diving in for his next attack. All traditional battling styles had been tossed out the window at the start of the war – Xander knew this, thus his Pokémon knew and were adjusted accordingly. The blonde was sure Fortis would never go back to simple battling ever again. Green eyes watched as the large eagle tore into the shoulder of the white haired girl, dragging her off the back of the blue beast. She tumbled to the ground after her green dragon. Fortis flew away, anticipating a counter attack from the now dismounted trainer’s Pokémon. He flew as fast as he could, but knew the dragon would catch him. He just had to get it away from Xander and Avi to deal with it one-on-one, without the distraction of having to protect Avi as well as fight. The roar followed behind him was closer than he thought, and he clicked his talons together as he flew. Prepping for the brawl with a quick Hone Claws move, which would increase his brute attacking power, which was his best attribute anyway by far. He tilted his wing in, spun around rapidly and swiped his talons forward, clenching for anything. The Crush Claw attempted to rip into the flaming dragon’s chest as it barreled into him. The two clashed, fighting for victory; Fortis’ claws in particular flashed and slashed, his wings flapping wildly, feathers billowing around him. A screech of pain ripped from his beak, but a look of determination undermined the pain’s normal hopeful response. Fortis wasn’t giving up anytime soon. Meanwhile, Xander and Avi were flying around, trying to find out where the white haired Alyssa had fallen. The splash had sent ripples through the water that had expanded to the edges of the river by the time the two had had gotten where they could see the surface through the darkness of the night. As they flew down the river, Xander couldn’t find her or the Flygon that had fallen out of the air. His senses were tingling though; the hair on the back of his neck stood up like he was being watched. He rubbed the great bird’s neck underneath him, calming her as she restlessly trilled softly. Her apparent distress for her mate would have been heart warming, but he needed her to be focused. He tried calming her, but the sentiment was for naught. A bright light was their only warning of the icy ray of deadly power zigzagged after them. Avi attempted to turn out of the way, but the ice hit a wing, freezing it. It was rendered useless and the pigeon dropped to the ground like a stone, screaming as she went. Xander’s mind went into survival mode, and he tumbled off the bird, angling his body as they approached the ground. The splash that incased him was terrifying cold, and he spun in the depths of the dark water. He couldn’t tell which way was up, but at least the water was still. He straightened himself and burst from the top of the water. He was met with a less than desirable image. Avi had crash landed into solid ground. The bank of the river was almost as hard as solid rock from that fall. The wing that had been cased in ice, was now free, but at the expense of being utterly broken. Unbelief and terror washed over the blonde as he rushed from the river, water splashing everywhere, falling off his soaked form and spraying everywhere. He broke from the clasping hands of the water, freeing his legs to move more freely. He reached the side of the majestic bird, which didn’t look so hot at the moment. He fell to his knees, hands gingerly touching where the fragile bones stuck out at random places from his bird’s wing. The other side of the bird didn’t look any better. Blood painted the path the body took as friction slowly caused it to stop. Sobs racked across the sentinel’s body. Avi wasn’t breathing. Anger erupted from the pit of his stomach, consuming him, making him see red. He turned around, looking through the darkness towards where the Ice Beam had come from. He pulled the knife from his belt, gripping it until his knuckles were white. There would be blood for this. Alyssa wouldn’t leave here without scars.

The cold hand of winter gripped at her chest, driving its icy claws into her heart and lungs mercilessly, every breath she took ripping through her body like cold fire. The cold was chilling her small body to the bone and making it hard to breath. I have to, though… she thought to herself as Flygon landed next to her. ”F-flygon…” the Mystic Pokemon’s breath was warm on her skin, sending a shiver throughout her body. He could sense his trainer was cold. Not an ignorable sort of cold either. Shuddering slightly, he called forth a small flame that he kept contained within his open mouth, like he had when he first attempted to learn Flamethrower. The glowing yellow-orange flame glowed in his mouth as he ran it just above his trainer’s body, attempting to warm her up and evaporate some moisture from her clothes before swallowing the flame, pushing his nose against her as she pushed herself up with her uninjured right arm.
”T-thank you…” she murmured, placing her hand on his muzzle. Although that had only warmed her slightly, it was better than nothing. ”Flygon, S-Salamence will need y-your help. Back him up. H-he’s using Outrage…the fatigue will confuse h-him.” Nodding with understanding, Flygon straightened and hovered above the water, sending ripples through it as he gave a final glance to his trainer. The Desert Spirit’s red-lensed eyes were looking at his trainer before rising to the teammate. He didn’t want to leave his trainer alone with King. Although he had fought alongside the other Dragon, he didn’t like the thought of his trainer being alone with a pokemon that could only move in the water.
”I’ll be f-fine.” she coughed, sensing his reluctance to leave. ”T-trust me. S-still have two others.” With a reluctant nod, the majestic Dragon flew to the side of the bridge and above it once again, just in time to see his red-glowing teammate meet the great bird pokemon in combat. He would hover a ways off until he was needed. This Outrage still had one or two more blows before subsiding to fatigue and confusion in the vicious Salamence’s mind.
As he rammed into the bird it met his attack ready for him. It was a decent opponent - not some chicken that could be picked out of the sky like prey. His bright red-glowing eyes narrowed and he shifted his forelimb as his body angled how he turned. The sharp claws of the bird ripped through his scaly hide on the right half of his pectoral muscles and then over his shoulder. He growled in pain but allowed his momentum to carry him past the opponent as he barreled by, above the bird. His foreleg glistening with the blood that had been drawn, he turned again and dove down on the bird from above, angling his body to drop upon it with his greater weight, and to offer some hope of protection thanks to the thick plate-like scales on his belly. This move and the next would need to be the ones to count.
The darkness around the bridge lit up as King fired his bright Ice Beam through the night towards its intended target. The sudden light alone was enough to make Alyssa jump and turn to face the sound that split the night moments later. A scream, not unlike the one that had come from her own body. King vanished beneath the water once more and retreated to darkness as her opponent as his bird fell into view. They were separated. The Lux soldier plunged into water, and moments later a sickening crack split through the air as the Pidgeot hit the ground, one wing encased in ice that shattered into shards. The sound made Alyssa’s stomach clench, and a nauseated feeling rise to her mind. The dimly lit body of the bird tumbled to a stop near the end of the bank. The sides of village bridge were uneven and riddled with rocks before some of the solid ground.
”Please no…” Alyssa breathed, horror overcoming her body, making her sway on the spot although she was still sitting.
Within her mind, a malicious voice spoke up, speaking something she’d already known.
There’s no way the bird could have survived.
As the trainer broke through the waves, Alyssa keeled over, retching with disgust, sadness and guilt. It wasn’t just this war she’d fought against people. She’d killed pokemon, too. Something she never even wanted to have nightmares about. The first was bad enough; the heartless trainer had left the tiny pokemon without so much of a second glance. Now a second was dead. She retched again, gagging on the maelstrom of feelings and thoughts circling within her.
This was war. What was she doing? Why had she changed like this? Why had the world come to this?
There were so many unanswered questions, and she felt as though her brain had frozen in addition to her body. Why. The sound of crunching gravel jolted her from the protective barriers her mind had begun to throw up and tell her to shut down.
If I don’t fight back, I’ll die.
She pushed herself up on the platform, to make her numb legs move. She stumbled onto the ground, rolling with her clumsy fall. Scrambling slightly to plant her feet and remain standing, she reached blindly against the ground. She’d seen something glint with the faint moonlight, and she grabbed it as soon as her hand laid on it. Walking into the light, she spun to face the opponent she had a feeling was coming for her. Undoubtedly enraged and grief-stricken by the death of his partner, she feared he would be irrational. Looking at the object she’d grabbed, she was happy to see that it at least had some length. Roughly two and a half feet long, the lead pipe in her grasp must have been blown out of the side of the bridge from another soldier’s battle.
Looking up through her bangs, she narrowed her eyes, attempting to hide the pain in them with determination that filled her. Her left arm was streaked with red, and as the limb hung limp by her side blood dripped from her fingers freely, from the burns torn open from their initial treatment, the gunshot, and the Crush Claw she’d taken. The odds were tipping unfavorably, but hopefully it would all be over soon.
There was one thing for certain, though – Alyssa would never forget the Battle of Village Bridge. It had already burned its place into her mind.

The blonde sentinel made no move to quiet his footsteps in the splashing water’s bank. He had nothing to fear in ranged combat anyway. All guns that were on either of the two would have been completely clogged up with water, powder drowned and thus rendered unusable until they got more. This battle had taken a change for the worst, a blast to the past if you would. They would be fighting tooth and nail like their Pokémon above them in a deadly dance for victory. His green eyes focused in front of him. He knew that the white hair of the other trainer was going to be visible even in this dead of night. The moon barely casted enough light to see, but that white hair stuck out like a sore thumb. Thus, the blonde knew his own hair was a sign of his advance. He wasnt worried. Everything in front of him was tinted red, the anger fueling him to the brink of recklessness. His body trembled with the barely suppressed rage he felt. Avi was dead. Gone. Forever. He would not stand for this. He would get his vengeance. There would be blood for this. He would personally see to that. He got close enough to hear her panting breath in the still of the night, slightly ragged, but he didn’t think too much into it. His own breath sounded far worse, and his body was still in tact. Hers had went through more damage than his had, blood splashed into the water at her feat. The cold water lapped at his ankles, his dress shoes completely ruined at this point, but none of that mattered – not with the adrenaline forcing his brain on a path that lead directly (not to mention only) to Alyssa. His entire being was bent on reeking havoc on this poor woman’s life – one way or another. He would be okay with dying if he at least crippled her beyond repair. He was that determined to get revenge, which he knew was a double sided blade. Dangerous, but did he care? Not at all. He gripped the hunting knife in his hand; the blade of pure steel glistened at the sharpened edge. The top two inches were lined with ridges that would feel a lot more like canines tearing into flesh when in contact with skin than bumps on a road. The rest was pristinely sharpened to perfection – only the best for a Cromwell. He leaned slightly on his left leg for a moment, sizing his opponent up in his mind. Then, out of nowhere, the weathered, trained and enraged soldier charged. Hell bent on sinking his knife into something. Meanwhile, in the air far above the ground, Fortis was fighting tooth to…talon, literally, with the enemy Salamance, which was stronger than Fortis had given credit in the first place. The two clashed in a flurry of feathers and blood, each one dealing out as much damage as the other received. Fortis may not possess the defensive abilities the dragon did, but he was every bit the dragon’s equal in strength. He was a fighting creature by nature – he lived for this. The dragon pushed through, beating his red wings hard to move on, Fortis fell backwards, flipping around to fly after the dragon. Who was retreating now? His battle cry rent the air, and the dragon turned to face him head-on. He flapped his wings harder, the air around him manipulating to his will, wrapping around his wings. He bolted through the air, turning at the last second before the dragon and he would collide again. The air gave his wings padding as he went to attack the right wing of the dragon with an Aerial Ace, the move Fortis used when he needed something done without fail. The move never seemed to let him down. His plan was to knock the dragon out of the air by destroying his wings – or at least breaking them.

A faint flash alerted Alyssa to the location of her target before used senses other than her gift of sight to track the progress of her enemy. His blonde hair only barely gave away his location before it vanished again into the shadows. Instead his footsteps crunching on the gravel of the bank and splashing quietly in the water allowed her to ‘see’ through the darkness to where she was. Although the distance remained hidden by the shadows, she at least knew his location now. Turning to face the direction of the sounds coming through the night air to her, she grit her teeth with displeasure. This fight would only end with violence and most likely more bloodshed. Although she could move her wounded arm, the limb screamed in protest even when it glanced by her side. Luckily enough, the adrenaline she felt pumping through her veins was enough to keep her distracted from the feeling of blood dampening her clothes and trailing down her arm and back from their respective injuries. Without it, she would have been rendered close to immobile.
There was a window of time, though, that was slowly beginning to close as to how long the adrenaline surging through her body would last.
She twitched the wrist of the hand holding the lead pipe at the ready like she would have a sword, cocking it in a defensive manner. She had a feeling he was not close enough to simply reach out and stab her, and given that his only way to attack any time soon would be to charge or throw his weapon at her. Alyssa had the feeling that her enemy was no dumbass, and further that he had at least a shred of common sense. This meant the former option was the most likely course of action, so Hoenn’s Leader knew she had to be ready. Shifting her stance slightly, she exhaled quietly, attempting to control her breath as it fogged up before her.
He was hellbent on revenge, she had no doubt. That opened any number of doors for possibility of how he attacked.
As if on cue, his footsteps stopped, causing Alyssa to narrow her eyes. Moments later, they picked up again – and fast. He was closing in, the charge she had predicted being enacted just before her. Allowing herself two quick backpedals into the moonlight, she was given a tiny fragment of time that would allow her to see her enemy moments before he reached her.
There!
As soon as the flash of his knife reached the open rays of moonlight, she twisted the lead pipe in front of her, extending the tool she would use as her weapon in this dog-eat-dog fight. She turned her body and reached the pipe forward, catching it on the underside of the serrated edge of the knife and thrust upwards as it came towards her to parry the blow and divert it. She slid the lead pipe closer to the hilt with a shower of fiery sparks from the clash of metal, shedding light on both their faces momentarily, showing the glowing determination in her blue eyes despite the fact this battle had become anything but an ideal situation.
High in the night sky above, the bird pokemon gave Salamence a better fight than the arrogant Dragon had been expecting – something he liked. He dove for the Eagle Pokemon in his move, half dropping down atop it to strike. Movement from the enemy caught his eye and the Dragon angled his position slightly, his near-serpentine neck angled to allow him to see. At what was almost the last moment, it registered in Salamence’s mind that an attack was about to be dealt.
The enemy became streaked in white and the blue Dragon turned, showing his belly to the opponent as the vicious Flying-type attack was released. It slashed against his already damaged shoulder, the upper half of his ribcage and part of his underbelly. A roar ripped from his mouth as the pain registered in his brain and the red glow faded from his eyes and body, the Outrage ending. He allowed himself to drop out of the sky like a rock, only controlling the descent so he didn’t crash. Had he not moved just then, his wings would have been struck – that was something the Dragon would not allow. The dream held of flying for so long had only recently come within his grasp and he would not permit it to leave so quickly.
A wave of fatigue crashed over Salamence and Flygon seized this opportunity to face this bird – to get back at it for that pride-damaging spank. The claws on his left forelimb glowing blue, the green Mystic Pokemon flew out to strike the bird with a Dragon Claw.
