Alyssa pulled her hoodie strings tighter around her head, closing the gap between her hood and the sides of her head to shut out the wind from whipping through her hair and ears. The long, white strands that fell to her ribcage stuck out in two even clumps on either side of her neck. A cold breeze whipped through Canalave City and churned the ocean beneath her feet as she crossed the bridge. The phone in her pocket had been silent for some time now, and Alyssa understood that as her friend had no questions or complaints as to where they were meeting or when. She smiled a little when she looked up, although she squinted against the harsh wind that sent chills down her back.
She wasn’t used to Sinnoh’s winters, seeing as she was almost always prepared for Hoenn’s which, compared to Sinnoh’s, were rather warm (simply going to show the contrast in Sinnoh’s climate from the tropical one of Hoenn). I didn’t dress for this... she thought, shivering before quickly ducking into the restaurant where she had agreed to meet Volkner. They had managed to contact each other after many years, partially because of the white-haired Veteran Trainer’s persistance at trying to find past friends of hers ever since she became Hoenn’s Leader. She’d spent time pooling resources she could afford to use into finding contact information on some stronger people she’d met in the past that she knew would make powerful allies.
Volkner was one of those people.
Since they first battled seven years ago, Alyssa had fallen out of contact with the yellow-haired Gym Leader thanks to her determination to accomplish her own goals, but with the rise of the war that had all changed. After a few rounds of phone-tag they had finally been able to speak, and quickly decided that a bit of a reunion and catch-up over lunch was in order.
I wonder how he’s been...or how he’s changed... she asked herself silently. She’d heard rumors that he’d withdrawn from people and become rather bored with his position as Gym Leader, often casting challengers aside simply because they...didn’t amuse him? I wonder why that is... she thought, biting her lip a bit as she made her way to a seat of her own, in the middle of the restaurant with two menus. The place was rather empty, luckily, which meant they could discuss matters of some importance with relative ease without fear of being overheard.
Now just to wait...

Volkner looked around the ocean city that he spent much time in now. Striker, his Luxray, was currently walking beside him along the ocean side. Volkner always had an obsession about the ocean. It might have been because he'd grown up beside it in his home of Sunyshore. Volkner gave a sigh at the thought, he always seemed to have serious face or depressed attitude as of late. He'd become steadily worse over the years and now he wondered how it all had started. He'd once been a midly content person, easily made friends and held up intelligent conversations. He'd tooken up the Sunyshore gym confident that he would be able to help new trainers and keep him excited in life. He was a child of ADHD so many things didn't keep him entertained for long and he couldn't handle long periods of one thing. Striker gave a deep growl and tugged on his trainer's pant leg impatiently. Volkner looked down at the black colored lion and raised an eyebrow.
"Yes, yes I know. We have to meet Alyssa thats why we came. We better leave." Volkner said with a sigh as he started to walk to the meeting he had with a old friend he'd met before he'd been the person he was now. He wondered faintly how she was doing. They'd known each other very briefly when Alyssa had visited Volkner at Sunyshore Gym determined to walk away with the last gym badge that she needed for Sinnoh. Volkner had enjoyed that battle very well. There were few who'd matched it. Keeping his hands in his pockets he walked to the meeting spot and and looked around for the white haired woman he'd contacted before to set up a meeting. After several games of phone tag he'd decided a meeting wouldn't be too bad. She was a old friend after all. Volkner had avoided getting into the political side of the war this far, he supposed that it wouldn't be much longer that he would have teh freedom to be that way though. Spotting the woman Volkner took out his right hand which held a Pokeball in it and looked at the black Poketch to look at the time and winced as he saw he was late. He pointed the Pokeball at the Luxray as Striker waited patiently as the red beam enveloped the Pokemon and he was returned within the Pokeball. Volkner hurried to the meeting place and spotted the white haired woman. She probably wasn't the same girl that had challenged his Gym so long ago. He'd heard about her throught the Nox grapevines enought to know she was doing well for herself now.
"Alyssa." Volkner said his voice deep and to the point. He'd matured since they'd seen each other. He was more somber now and serious. He didn't frolic around like he had before with Flint back in the day. "Shall we go in? You look like you're cold." The blonde said as he mentioned inside. Alyssa sunk lower into her hoodie as she attempted to hide her ears beneath some folded-over material of the hood. Similar to Hoenn’s more water-related towns and cities, the places to fear in Sinnoh’s winter (aside from Snowpoint City of course) were bordered by water. There, the cold was no longer a person’s worst enemy, but instead the wind was. It cut through the waters and churned the waves into whitecaps as they broke to the surface, and cut through you unless properly dressed...which Alyssa, unfortunately, was not. She was kicking herself for it, too.
Her cerulean eyes remained locked on the ground as she mentally attempted to block out the wind, but her chattering teeth made concentration more difficult than it needed to be. Hoenn’s Leader didn’t even notice her old friend approaching until he was ride beside her, and grabbed her attention by simply stating her name. She almost jumped before looking up at him...literally, up. He’d grown since their last meeting, she’d predicted, but not height-wise like this. He had to have gained four or five inches since their last meeting. His voice had changed a bit, too, though not as drastically as his height. She’d already heard the rumors that his personality had changed as well, and she believed that, but she wasn’t sure how she believed it. Her personality had changed, too, with some of the more important traits that needed to be gained or lost by a certain age, but her general outlook and attitude towards things had remained relatively the same.
”Shall we go in? You look like you’re cold.”
”Unfortunately I fear I came a bit unprepared for the cold.”
Alyssa nodded quickly and slipped indoors as he gestured for her to do so. As soon as the door was closed, she turned to Volkner, looking up at him with a small smile. ”It’s good to see you again, Volkner...” she stated warmly, letting her blue eyes meet his when she spoke, the waitress picking up menus and gesturing for them to follow barely registering. She spared a few seconds to stay in eye-contact with him before following the waitress to the table. ”How have you been these past years?”
Glancing around, the Veteran Trainer was relieved to see that the restaurant was relatively empty as she’d predicted. I guess residents of Canalave would rather stay inside than get buffeted by the wind.... she thought.

He had a habit of not doing the normal social rituals that people seemed to partake in when meeting one another. Hell normally Volkner would rather be tinkering with some new machines by himself or reading a book. He wasn’t exactly the most social. He had always been a shy child, steadily getting worse as he got worse. Of course that loud obnoxious Flint hadn’t done a damn of good either.
“Unfortunately I fear I came a bit unprepared for the cold.” Volkner just shook his head and watched her.
“You sure got that right. Sinnoh’s winters are the harshest around. Make sure you’re fully prepared for cold if you go to Snowpoint. You will get frost bite there. Let’s hurry and get you in so you don’t freeze simply here in Canalave though.”
Volkner said with another shake of his head. He was slightly more social with some friends. But it was rare. He preferred speaking through body language as the spoken word could be misunderstood consciously but body language was all subconscious and straight from the heart. A reason Volkner preferred it. No lies, no misunderstandings. They headed inside and Volkner debating hanging his coat on the rack by the door. Deciding against it he kept his coat on.
“How have you been these past years?”
“I’ve been alright I suppose. Bored most of the times, fiddling with electronics and things as I always have. One day, when we get Sunyshore back, you’ll have to visit the gym again. It’s different from when you last visited. Much more shocking.” Volkner said with a quick grin that was there and gone again. He was known for putting in horrible electricity puns. He enjoyed them and that was all he cared about to his mind. Volkner had never been one to worry over public images. Probably why he had a not so good reputation in Sunyshore.
Volkner followed Alyssa as they were gestured by the table they were to sit at. Volkner pulled out a chair and motioned for Alyssa to sit. No matter what he’d always been taught his manners when he was a child and still kept them no matter how rough he seemed on the outside. Volkner didn’t mind too much as it still kept his image. Waiting for Alyssa to be seated he kept his face in the neutral look he always had it.
“Here you go. How have you been Alyssa. Still havn’t grown much taller I see. Did you finish your goal you had so ?” Volkner asked with his disinterested tone. He’d been so disinterested for so long his body just kept the stance. It was rare for excitement or adrenaline to flow through and show out of the mask he always seemed to wear. ”You sure got that right. Sinnoh’s winters are the harshest around. Make sure you’re fully prepared for the cold if you go to Snowpoint. You will get frostbite there. Let’s hurry and get you in so you don’t freeze simply here in Canalave though.”
Alyssa smiled a bit as she reflected on her friend’s statement, the expression leaning closer towards a smirk. You don’t say... Her hoodie barely passed as something to keep her warm, much less a windbreaker. It was so fin and uninsulated that it was practifcally a second shirt. A bit pointless, really, but at least it was an extra layer. I’ll have to see if I can find a better hoodie... she thought, making a note to drop by Lilycove’s Department Store upon the return home. If she planned on travelling around more and more, she would need to be prepared. I’d a fool to not get more prepared... she thought.
She listened as he responded to her fairly up-beat and curious question. So, he’s bored most of the time, huh? She bit her lip and supressed a bit of a frown, her mouth turning partially sideways. She wished he was more enteretained, but now it seemed the rumors she’d heard since leaving Sinnoh were true. But had he really been so bored with battles other than those that wound up resulting in him handing out his Beacon Badge? I guess, if he had time to re-vamp his gym before the war...
She suddenly felt a wave of sadness for him. That’s right...Lux took his gym from him, and his whole city... She could relate to that, unfortunately. While she was no Gym Leader, having no set type she specialized in, she too had been cast out of a town which she’d grown up in. Verdanturf was Lux territory, and practically everybody there were strong supporters of the opposite faction’s cause. Including mom and dad... she thought, frowning very slightly before forcing the expression off of her face as he pulled a chair out for her to sit in.
She was about to open her mouth to thank him before his words cut her off.
Still haven’t grown much taller...
She stared at him unblinkingly, her expression rather flat as she forced back the reaction of a twitching eyebrow or temple pulsing from annoyance. ”Well that was kind of rude!” she said, glancing to the side in faint embarassment. From her tone he would be able to tell she wasn’t angry, and taking the time chide him gently more than anything. ”Commenting on someone’s height as though it were a bad thing. What, do you think I’m still a kid or something?!” She let a faux-defensive edge slip into her tone, turning her eyes back to him. After a minute she sighed and gave a quiet chuckle before respoding with a bit of sarcasm. ”Well spotted.”
She slipped into the seat he had pulled out for her and leaned back in it after pulling it closer to the table. Crossing her arms, she did so for her right leg as well, resting it easily over her left. ”But...I’ve been pretty good myself. I guess I’m doing remarkably well, actually, given the circumstances of things...” she told him, referring to the war. ”After I defeated you I returned to Hoenn and took on the seven Frontier Brains for their Silver Symbols before challenging them again and taking their Gold Symbols in one fell swoop then turning to Sinnohs and defeating them as well.” She paused before adding, ”It was then that I took a break from ‘competitive’ battling to simply train so I could take on all Elite Fours and Champions in stride. Those plans got put on hold, though, thanks to the war...”
She fell quiet when the waitress approached, quickly pouring them each a glass of water before disappearing into the kitchen again.
”And...I would love to visit your gym once it’s re-claimed...another thing I planned to do was re-battle the Gym Leaders I have in the past. If you wouldn’t mind being first on that checklist I’d be more than happy to return.” she informed him with a smile.

There was a nice fireplace near their table to warm up cold guests. Volkner had gotten distracted and wandered in the cold a bit too much. Enjoyed the seaside cities, they reminded him of home and Volkner always got a bit homesick when he visited ocean side cities. It was especially bad in Olivine, where Volkner was stationed for living quarters. The city was so close to Sunyshore Volkner constantly found himself drifting off into a day dream like state. Volkner straightened at her 'rude' comment and raised a brow. Her tone let him off the hook on the thought that he might have tooken a wrong step. Women were fickle creatures after all. Volkner wouldn't be the first to admit he had no idea why they looked at things the way they did. He knew how they looked at things but had deduced long ago that he would never be able to understand the 'why'. The why would always baffle him. Volkner raised both hands in his defense to silence his old friend.
"Now now, when did I ever say it was a bad thing, hm? I just commented you hadn't grown much. It's better to be short after all. You know of Lightning Rods, hm? Well think of it this way, you arn't one lucky enough for you. You'll live while the tall things on the earth get struck down before you." Volkner said with a shrug and watched her as she talked about her progress. Alyssa had been very strong at the time when she'd battled Volkner. They had both still been a bit young, a battle between them at their current levels would be very interesting indeed, Volkner thought with a curious expession as he looked down at the glass of water a waitress sat in front him. He thanked her quietly and picked the glass up and sipped at it lightly. He was warming from the brisk wind from Canalave's outside. Sinnoh's winters were harsh, but used to them, Volkner usually just endured them. What didn't kill you only made you stronger right?
"That sounds good, Alyssa. Once things have settled and we sort things out I'd love to battle you again. I'm always up for a good match after all. Well that is if you can get through my gym first." Volkner said letting off a cocky grin as he talked of his pride and joy. If there was anything Volkner wasn't more proud of it was his Gym. If anything happened to it... well he didn't know what he'd do. But it might be drastic.
"I don't know. This whole Nox thing seems pretty boring. Just sitting here taking orders. I don't see the difference between Nox and Lux besides the fact that Lux seems to be more organized." Volkner said his face now disinterested and giving a indifferent shrug as he stuffed his hands in the pockets of his blue jacket and leaned back in his chair. The white-haired Leader couldn’t help but smirk a bit at her friend’s actions. Raising his hands slightly before his body in a way that would prevent her from verbally attacking him further (if she even was realistically, her outburst just then had mostly been something of annoyance coupled with hidden embarassment that only few people managed to spur from her...that, or anybody that said the right thing. Alyssa gave her mind a chance to focus on what he had said shortly after her outburst before she gave him a general update on how she’d been doing. She had to admit, comparing her height to that of those that were taller than her, and then further comparing them to Lightning Rods was something she’d never heard. Leave it to an Electric-type specialist to make a comparison to lightning rod... she mused quietly, smirking a bit despite the events that had taken place in the past few days.
Death. Destruction. Needless bloodshed. Violence. It was all something she hadn’t wanted to see in the war, but she had slowly been realizing that it was inevitable, no matter if she just did the bare minimum when it came to following her orers. Destruction and death would follow. She took no pleasure in it; she only did as she was told. But events that she had witnessed and experienced were things that she assumed nobody would order. Especially yesterdays... her eyes darkened with sadness and she stared at her drink, suddenly oblivious to the world around her, seeing as her mind threw up protective barriers at the thought of yesterday’s catostrophic events.
She had been forced to return to Olivine after losing a bet (or something comparable to that), probably to boost the morale of the man she’d lost the bet too, as well as the Nox demonstrators she’d stepped into the midst of. It was then that a Lux terrorist had made it clear that they would stand for no Nox celebration, innocent as it was. Poison, fire, and a Hyper Beam had interrupted the crowd, mostly through the means of death...humans and pokemon alike.
Lecsi...
The gutsy Kecleon had been among the casualties. Alyssa had hardly gotten to train the Color-Change pokemon, much less bond with her since she first caught the lizard. Their time together had been brief, but due to the lack of a bond, Alyssa’s sadness at the loss was not as significant as it could have been. However, she still felt the dull throb of pain as when she thought of the deaths of Ledyba and Kricketot, the two baby Bug-pokemon that had joined her party for not even a week before they were lost.
So much...it’s taken from everybody. She stroked the sides of her water, which remained untouched in its glass for the most part.
Her cerulean gaze remained trained on her glass, even as Volkner spoke. His voice registered in her mind, but barely. He had accepted her challenge to be the first on her list of Gym Leaders to re-battle, that was good. Alyssa appreciated an accepted challenge, especially one from an expereinced trainer. So many weak trainers that thoughtlessly challenged her because their own arrogance allowed them to proved to be uninteresting and quick matches, often resulting in a dumbfounded challenger.
Despite the current state her mind was in at the moment, she managed to smirk a bit at the Gym Leader’s words. If she could get through the gym, eh? That was a challenge she’d willingly take and most likely breeze through if she put her mind to it. I could probably defeat him the same way I did last time... she thought, her expression showing nothing more than a haunted stare at her glass now that the smirk had vanished. Ground-type moves...most likely Earthquake. Swampert would be a good choice again. So would Flygon. Or I could play with him a little by sending in a plethora of other types...
Her musings left her silent until he spoke again, when she responded.
”That is the most obvious difference...” her voice was quiet, suddenly sounding tired and stressed compared to what it had just been. ”...Nox are the revolutionaries. If we had a hierarchy comparable to Lux’s it would be incredible. We’ve managed to keep our heads afloat but...that will soon need to change.” She fell to silence for a minute, wiping the condensation off the side of her glass. ”Truly, Lux and Nox are not all that different...”
Alyssa spoke truthfully, seeing as the true dividing lines were the viewpoint of the two factions, and how well they were organized. ”We both fight for what we understand as the greater good. We both suffer casualties. We experience the horrors of war, just through different eyes and understandings. Even if somebody is victorious for one side, it does not necessarily mean they are happy with the outcome...it could have cost them much more than what’s seen on the surface.”
Alyssa realized she was speaking from personal experience, seeing as the holes toppling Olivine’s lighthouse had driven through her mind were as clean-cut as ever. She attempted to shove that aside, as to not concern her old friend with the things that had begun changing her since their last meeting, and not all for the good.
”It’s only after we’ve –“ she was still speaking for both Lux and Nox, ”—lost something that we understand war. The true horror of it is not being injured yourself; it is watching those important to you being injured...”

Volkner stayed silent as he listened to Alyssa's words. he contemplated his past actions and wondered if he'd never even given either faction a choice and joined Nox only to hide in his lonesome as he had for years. Shaking his head Volkner decided he'd continue to hear Alyssa out. Maybe the Nox leader would be worth listening to. She was also a freind of his as well, and he could tell she was talking from experiencing. Volkner patted Alyssa's hand once more. "Alyssa.... I'm not good at comforting words. That's more Platinum or Flint who are better at those kind of words. I'm learning but... I think words are something like you have to keep moving for those you have with you that are still alive. If you dont, you'll only get caught in your own despair and fall with them." Volkner trailed off and shook his head. What was he even talking about now? Shaking his head he pulled off and took a sip of the water that had been sat infront of him. "You should... Tell me more about Nox... I'm thinking it might be interesting to lend them my help if they have a just cause." Volkner said looked at Alyssa with a honest expression. He wondered what Nox had going for them truthfully. He'd heard them reffered to terrorists, and rebellions. What Volkner wondered was if they were Freedom Fighters those where the people he could respect and trust, and support and join in their cause. Volkner had always been one for the freedom of the individual person. The League had tried to take away certain freedoms before, but Volkner had done as he pleased anyhow and hadn't gave a damn to their rules and whatnot. Being the Eighth gym leader for Sinnoh had given him a rather big boost as well, since the other gym leaders had supported him before. Volkner wondered briefly if he could convince them to join them this time. Sinnoh had always been about free spirits. Even with the trouble between Team Galactic and the Twinleaf Trio it had come down to free will and not abusing the right to life now hadn't it?
"What are some useful skills do you think for a Nox member to know and such?" Volkner asked with a curious look. He usually didn't get too interested in something but when he did his curiousity usually got him into something that would lead him into some kind of trouble he'd regret later. Or, at had when he got into trouble with stupid afro idiot.

Alyssa almost jumped a foot in the air when Volkner came into contact with her hand. She started visibly, as though he’d shocked her. In a sense, he had, but not as though it were caused by static. She raised her eyes from the liquid that she had been staring at in her glass to meet Volkners, blue meeting blue like two streams of water colliding to create a rivr. His eyes were serious, as was his expression. Different from what she’d seen years ago, but something that didn’t entirely counter the rumors she’d been hearing. In fact, the seriousness within them seemed to counter the saying that he’d been so bored recently. In Alyssa’s opinion, there was a fine line between seriousness and boredom, and you needed to look at it correctly not to mistake one for the other. Am I mistaking it now...? she wondered, only to have those thoughts vanish when he spoke.
” Alyssa.... I'm not good at comforting words. That's more Platinum or Flint who are better at those kind of words. I'm learning but... I think words are something like you have to keep moving for those you have with you that are still alive. If you dont, you'll only get caught in your own despair and fall with them”
Platinum... the younger girl would have had more to say in a situation like this than Volkner did...any girl drawing a comparison between the two would immediately go to Platinum for comfort rather than Volkner, simply by looking at them (no offense to Volkner). She hated the phrase so much, but the saying ‘it’s a girl thing’ came to the white-haired woman’s mind. Flint, on the other hand, was an entirely different matter. Alyssa could not vouch for him one way or the other, seeing as she’d never met him. However, she took Volkner’s word for it, they were practically best friends, after all. He has at least some sense when it comes to Flint, I would hope...
She sighed a little and relaxed the tension that had apparently been building up within her shoulders. Alyssa gave her head a small shake, clearing her mind from the thoughts that had clouded them. The horror of yesterday was still fresh in her mind, and fighting to overcome her senses and distract her. For now she could only focus on his words and cling to the state of mind she had been in minutes ago. Volkners words sunk in, and Alyssa could feel her mind soaking them up like a sponge as it sluggishly processed them.
A small smile managed to pull at her lips as she looked back at her water, hating to tear her gaze from the Gym Leader’s before her. You may be learning, Volkner, but...those were the words of somebody who has no need to learn...thank you... She couldn’t stand to not look at him for much longer without conveying her thanks, as though she were trying to hide it. Raising her glass to her lips, she finally took a sip before looking back at him, the gratitude evient in her light gaze.
”You should tell me more about Nox. I’m thinking it might be interesting to lend them my help if they have a just cause.”
She raised her eyebrows slightly in surprise. He wanted to fight more avidly for Nox, eh? But only for a just cause? A smile managed to pull at her lips again as she thought about how to answer her old friend’s question. His words made him seem both more passionate about Nox and wiser than his age permitted him to look. I think you give yourself less credit than you deserve... she thought, a streak of friendly affection glimsing through her mind as she looked at him, thinking carefully about an answer. Looking to the side, aroudn the empty restaurant, she considered. She heard his voice again, but she had turned her right ear to him, the one that had been most severely damaged in the explosion yesterday. Although neither of her eardrums had fully burst, they were both damaged...the right more than the left. His words came out muffled, as though she’d clamped a hand over them.
Just ask later... she told herself.
”I cannot answer on behalf of the whole of Nox, Helios...” she told him honestly, using the name she’d established for him after their battle when he established one for her in return, Nyx. Day and Night, respectively. ”...as one of your five Leaders I know that doesn’t exactly sound ‘good’, for lack of a better word, but I can tell you what I fight for, and what I know other members fight for.”
She took another sip of her drink.
”I fight for our freedoms. For our rights. For peace. I know my actions elsewhere would argue such...” her gaze darkened momentarily before lifting, ”...ut it is ultimately what I fight for, because I believe it is right. Some, if they knew parts of my past, would argue that I fight for vengeance. To get back at Lux for their actions that have affected me personally more than it has affected everybody else. But no...I seek no blood.” she thought about her words for a moment. ”Myself and others fight for freedom that has been supressed thanks to Lux’s tyrannical laws and iron fist that they’ve ruled with. We fight for the rights that were taken away from us. Nox are called terrorists and unorganized rebels that care nothing for the lives of others.” She frowned slightly. ”That may be true for others, but not for myself and those I have allied myself with within Nox. I am a Revolutionary. Somebody who fights for change. What one might call a Freedom Fighter. Given the chance, I will avoid killing and destruction, and I regret any actions that are necessary and result in such. The best way I’ve been able to get over my feelings for past actions is by telling myself that my actions were necessary for our voice to be heard, the voice that Lux silenced - a voice that I will continue to make louder until we succeed in being heard.”
A passionate fire of had blazed in her expression at those words, a determination that was reflected as cold ice within her eyes, and it took her a moment to realize that had responded in the manner she had. ....I think that’s the closest to sounding like a Leader that I’ve ever come... she realized, suddenly a bit embarassed to have put Volkner through that. She took a hurried sip of water and glanced at him apologetically over the rim of her glass before turning to the waitress who had appeared at their side to take their orders.
...oh, duh. Menu. Right.
She only glanced at it before ordering, hoping Volkner already had something in mind since he’d frequented the restaurant far more than her seeing as his home City was down the route from Canalave and he’d undoubtedly come here more than her.
”I’ll take Miltank-fried rice,” she ordered, glancing at the sides that came with it, ”...and some vegetables to the side, thank you.”
She waited in silence until Volkner completed his order before continuing, her cheeks flushing with some embarassment.
”And...I’m going to have to ask you to repeat your last question...” she rubbed the back of her neck absently, though holding his gaze. ”I was uh...in close proximity of an explosion yesterday, and both of my eardrums were damaged...I can’t exactly hear well, nor will I be able to for the next couple of weeks...”
She shrugged a bit. This was war, right?

He’d done something wrong, or something that wasn’t expected of him. He could tell by the shocked look on Alyssa’s face. Volkner mentally scolded himself and told him he couldn’t be like Platinum and Flint. No matter how hard he tried, he didn’t have the soothing persona or calming aura that helped people calm down and get a grip. Volkner kept the flat look in his eyes and it wasn’t too long before he dropped her gaze and sipped on his water. Listening with and interested ear when Alyssa started to answer his question about Nox’s reason r to fight. He listened and got the impression of Alyssa’s reasons for fighting. It hadn’t been the general reason that he’d been originally asking for when the question had formed. Now as Volkner listened, he actually like Alyssa’s answer even better then what he supposed the Glittering Generality would have been. He nodded through her speech with a thoughtful look on his face. This was a good sign seeing as he normally just gave a blank ‘I really don’t care’ look to most things. It was rare to get an actual facial expression out of him he supposed. He just never saw the reason to care. After being a Gym Leader he’d found himself wondering if rushing in for the city official spot with the League had been the best choice all those years ago. What would he have accomplished if he hadn’t tied himself down? Sunyshore was indeed well known for its technology that Volkner had invested in it. He wanted to talk to Alyssa about getting it back and putting him in charge again. He was used to Leader positions in groups and had the authoritive figure and the experience. Not to mention he knew all about Sunyshore, it being his own city after all, he would undoubtedly know it best.
“I see. I’ve been thinking of lending Nox my support for a time now and hearing from you increased my curiousity. I think I may lend my strength to Nox as much as I can.” Volkner said picking up his menu and spotting exactly what he wanted he waited for Alyssa to order then pointed to the Corpish platter. “I’ll have the corpish platter with shelder chowder please.” Volkner said and handed his menu to the waiter and turning his attention to Alyssa fully, ignoring the waiter now. He stayed quiet until he saw that the waiter had left and looked to Alyssa as she asked him to repeat his last question. He nodded at her explanation and nodded.
“Perfectly understandable. I was wondering what you think a good Nox member would need skills for. For regular work and such.” Volkner said and folded his hands to build a sort of bridge to rest his hands on as he looked at Alyssa once again wondering what skills she supposed that a Nox member would need. He hoped to learn something that might give him an edge in the engineering field or technology field eventually. “I figured you’d know somewhat being in Nox yourself, and being in such a high position.” Volkner said explaining and saying it so that Alyssa should have been able to hear him time. He worried slightly about the condition of her physical health though.
“You should get that checked by a medic or doctor though, to make sure that you don’t permanently harm anything on your person.” Volkner said with a concerned furrow of his brow as he thought about the thought of his good friend being hurt beyond repair. Why the hell did I start… she had cursed herself mentally while he ordered. The contact between them had been severed as rapidly as it had connected. He must have thought poorly of himself for her startled reaction and thought he’d done something wrong. She had managed to push back the urge to jump up and tell him his actions had been fine, and good even. I’ll have to find a way to work it in later… she had thought, biting down on her own tongue in frustration. If he’s trying to improve, the best thing I can do for him is tell him that what he did was comforting, not leave him with the impression that it was something unexpected or disliked. Some friend I’d make…
Corpish platter and Shellder chowder…not bad choices. Alyssa was used to more land-based meals, but being in Canalave, she assumed seafood was something of a specialty and commonly ordered dish. That was beside the point, though. More interestingly, he was interested in lending more of his strength to Nox? That was a bonus, both politically and in the balance of power as far as Lux and Nox went. Volkner would be a valuable and well-liked addition to the higher positions in Nox, if he decided to cast his influence out for the highest ranks. Being the eighth Gym Leader of Sinnoh once upon a time, Alyssa figured that her friend was used to a position of some power and Leadership. Though he did not necessarily pass for a person with the right attitude at a first glance, he had the drive and initiative. He practically built Sunyshore up from what it used to be into a technology powerhouse. Although she knew little of what it used to be, she knew that Volkner’s relentless efforts had brought it to the valuable port status it had today.
She heard the question as he repeated it, and she smiled slightly. He truly did seem interested in getting more involved, asking what a good Nox member had as a skill set? Maybe I can convince him to aim for something higher than simply being comparable to a Grunt status-wise… she thought, a flame of hope igniting within her chest. She had a feeling that if there was anybody in the Pokemon world that would be able to convince Volkner to do something for Nox, it was her. Platinum and Flint had turned for Lux, and she couldn’t imagine what that must have been like for him, if it was worse than simply disappointment and a rift of differing views driven between friends. Although she, too, knew Platinum, she had a feeling the yellow-haired man’s level of friendship with the mature young lady was something different from hers.
Opening her mouth to respond, she was silenced by his words of concern, and she blinked once, examining his expression. He truly was concerned, and she knew he had perfect reason to be such. ”I’ll be fine, I promise…” she told him quietly, thinking for a moment before extending her hand towards the one he had wrapped around his glass, mirroring the gesture he had done minutes earlier when she placed her fingertips lightly against the back of his hand, a small smile and warm look in her eyes. She hoped from her expression he was able to discern that she truly was grateful for his concern, and that from her actions he could tell that his had been fine.
”…my eardrums didn’t burst, but they were damaged. When I get some free time I’ll get it checked out.” nodding slightly, she confirmed her words, and made a note to actually do that. ”As far as skill sets for Nox members go…truly it depends on the person.” she lowered her voice a bit ”Depending on what you want to do in Nox, your skills can vary. Intelligence and data gathering, mechanics and electrics…” she looked at him with her eyebrows raised slightly, knowing that would grab his attention. ”…engineering and weapon-building skills, etc. Nox has a broad range of skill sets as broad as the sort of people we have fighting for us. There is really no ‘list’ of preferred skills I could tell you…”
She thought for a moment, pausing to think before continuing on. ”Some people have next to none, such as myself.” she told him, shrugging a bit. ”I only have a few skills I can call ‘useful’ - outside of the realm of pokemon battling, that is…” she gave a weak, dark-ish chuckle under her breath. ”Some ‘Leader’ I am…” she murmured. ”I have a minimal skill set and I’ve already lost a territory in my own Region.” The white-haired Veteran knew that she would not forgive herself for the loss of Sootopolis for as long as it remained conquered by Lux and she remained the Leader of Hoenn. ”I’m not exactly a prime example of somebody you want to ask about skills. In fact, you should actually look at yourself..” she told him, lightening the mood somewhat with a smile.

Depending on what he wanted to do? Well Volkner didn’t exactly know what he wanted to do. Maybe he’d go for something simple he could use on missions and such… He really had no clue if he’d simply help Nox as a grunt or aim for something possibly higher rank. He was sure he could do it, it was just the fact if he wanted to. Alyssa started talking again about having minimal skill set and being a bad Leader.
“Anything you could teach me I’d be willing to learn. I’m willing to learn, and I’m a great student.” Volkner said with a grin then his face went serious. “You think you’re a bad leader, Alyssa? Losing some territories? Eh. Sure it’ll look somewhat bad on your record but as long as you make sure that you keep up Nox’s morale and keep Nox going strong and don’t let them give up. As long as you keep fighting you’re a good Leader from what I’ve seen. Compared to some people.” Volkner said thinking of some of the other Gym Leaders he’d met in Sinnoh. He wasn’t all too sure of Roark seeing as he spent so much time away from his Gym and all. Volkner had to go into those damn caves to find him most of the damn time. Volkner hated caves. Electrically speaking they were not the best surroundings. Especially with cave ins and all that nonsense.
Volkner shook his head and cocked his head to the side in confusion to Alyssa again. “Look at myself? I’m pleased you think I have skills. But all I’m really good at is fiddling electrical supplies and the sort apparently.” Volkner said thinking of his failed attempt at getting Sunyshore to join him into Nox. Some Leader ha had been.

Alyssa smiled a bit to herself at his willingness to learn. That was something she looked for whenever she considered teaching somebody a set of skills they may find useful in the future. She looked up to somebody that had a willingness to learn – be it for themselves or for a greater cause like Volkner, who was looking to do more for Nox. Perhaps I could convince him to join my rank as Leader... the possibility entered her mind once again. I should try to convince him to do so. He’s a valuable and powerful ally...I don’t want to lose him or see his talents go to waste. Volkner ignited her hopes further by claiming to be a good student – that was a plus.
She smiled a bit to herself and raised her glass to her lips, only for the smile to vanish as he continued to speak, this time with more seriousness than she’d previously seen in him. She was rendered still and nearly mute by his words. He...actually believed she was a good leader? That heartened her. She would be the first to admit that she was not born into a position where she was raised and trained to lead, but she would also be the first to say that she was working to suit her role better than she was. She wanted to fit the image of Leader sooner, and she felt she was making progress. One thing she didn’t like to think about, though, was how she was changing on the battlefield. She was becoming a different person on and off the battlefield, as though she were developing a second identity that was born from the war.
Snap out of it, Alyssa!
She shook her mental self vigorously and focused back on Volkner. She began smiling again easily as he appeared confused to her words. ”Sure, Volkner...” she told him, her smile splitting into a grin. ”Your skill with electrical working and wiring is proven ten times over in how you helped raise Sunyshore from what it used to be. The technological advancements you installed in that city are incredible.”
She lowered her voice slightly. ”If Nox is one day able to re-claim Sunyshore in their name, that will give us a huge leg-up with the technology that has been hard to come by in the past two years.”
She sat back as their food arrived, surprisingly quickly. It was placed in front of them and the waitress walked off, but not after re-filling their waters and lighting the candle on the table to accommodate the dimmed lights of the restaurant. Night must be falling... she knew restaurants dimmed lights and lit candles only after Night fell outside, to accommodate the atmosphere. More people were entering the restaurant now at the start of the main diner hour.
Returning her voice to normal level and picking up her fork, Alyssa continued speaking. ”In my opinion, your skill set is something worth envy.” she smirked a bit and stirred the meat within her rice, to spread the flavor through the whole dish instead of just on top like it had been. ”The only three things I have to my name are these...” She indicated with her fingers as she listed them off,
”One, and by far most importantly, my prowess and skill in battle, coupled with my knowledge of pokemon in general. Two, I can pick locks...fairly easily, actually. Finally, I have basic knowledge of self-defensive martial arts combined with a fairly extensive knowledge of the human body – I can use that in conjunction with a fist fight to strike pressure points of my enemy and cause them severe pain, fainting, or even death.”
She finished rather abruptly, proving she was finished her turn speaking by eating a forkful of rice and a sliver of Miltank meat. Her self defense skill was unimpressive but more of a secret nonetheless, however, coupled with little hesitation to strike vital points of a person’s body, it was more worrysome.

Volkner listened to Alyssa's words while focusing on his Shelder soup first. He nodded at her points. All were true, as expected by the one and only Alyssa Akiyama. As long as Volkner had known the girl she'd always been honest in everything she did while making sure everyone were treated fairly but not afraid to get dirty when she had to. Olivine and Village Bridge as examples. Both had taken some damage where Alyssa's name was mentioned. Volkner figured that since people trusted him with Electricals he would be able to help Nox with the damages to places like the Lighthouse were the could fix the electrical basis of the the structure as the works built up then basis of the structure in the mean time. There wasn't enough man power for the task personally. Thought, if they could rebuild the symbolism of Olivine again it might soothe the citizens and get them tio trust Nox a bit. Volkner gave it a thoughtful expression and sipped on his water the waiter had refilled for them.
Volkner dismissed the lit candles and sighed. They always hurt his eyes whenever he was near them. He didn't often work in low light. He preffered to have the bright lights of his workshop or the light emitting from his Electrical Pokemon. Volkner's head jerked up when she mentined possibly reclaiming Sunyshore. Could they do that? He knew he was able to sneak into Sunyshore all the time as they didn't have a city official in the city to keep a tight watch, but completely take over.
"Alyssa... If you can get Sunyshore back, I'll do anything in my power to make sure that Nox gets those technical advances that they need to bring them a few notches up in the war. Whatever Nox needs. If they want to set up some electrical traps in skirmishes to hit Lux when they invade places like we all know they're going to do to Snowpoint soon, I'd be able to conjure a few things." Volkner stated his mind turning gears and sparking with ideas. "If we can also get ahold of enough supplies I could look into their technology. Electrical gear, spy gear. Find ways to duplicate it or even destroy it. Though using pokemon would be the best logical choice. For that. But I could easily figure out how disable them with what moves quickly and efficiently to take Lux out and even the scoring." Volkner said sipping the last of his soup. His brain still turning wheels and thinking. I mean. I have a place here in Canalave I could do some minor fiddling and tweaking. But if we can get me into Sunyshore. I could get my supplies and then Nox would be getting somewhere." Volkner said with a arrogant grina and folded his hands over his mouth in a bridge.
Alyssa talked about his skill set and envy. He didn't see much to envy about his skill set. Sure he was titled as an electrical genius by the people but, if you lived in Sunyshore for more than a few months you saw there was lots of blackouts and technological difficulties and such. It took a great deal of patience from those that he supported in his city. But in return he always made sure the outcome was far better than the trouble that was put in tio make the outcome. "I dont know about envy, but I suppose I have an alright skill set. But I want to know more. I want to get better. Anyway I can help Nox, I want to do. I'm not afraid of the danger as there's no one I really have to protect." Volkner said speaking the utter truth. He had no special someone to fight for or any of that nonsense. What he did have was his feeling that he had to fight for what was right.

Alyssa stared at Volkner’s face for at least a full minute, blinking repeatedly as she tried to force her eyes to adjust sooner rather than later. Keeping the atmosphere...it was something Alyssa could go without, considering getting blinded temporarily by the onset of darkness was undesireable. He seemed to be absorbed in his Shellder Soup, but her words had snapped his head up, and she was a bit surprised by the strength of his reaction. She had expected him to leap at the possibility of getting his City back, but the suddenness with which he snapped his head up made her jolt with surprise nonetheless.
She allowed a small smile to crawl across her face while she kept her gaze aimed at the bowl of rice beneath her. She’d gotten his attention as predicted. That was good. She had long-term intentions of reclaiming all of Hoenn in the name of Nox, but that would take a fair amount of time. She knew she had to start small. Her home Region was more than 60% Lux territory, even her own hometown. Don’t think about Verdanturf... she told herself, getting back on topic. She needed to start small. Start with goals that were more easily accomplished – starting skirmishes in already disputed areas and turning them to Nox control.
Hoenn’s Leader was glad to have her old friend’s support in this. That was essential. She vowed to herself that she would help him get his City back. She alredy knew the discomfort and feelings that flew through with having ones hometown snatched away by Lux, and she didn’t wish that upon another person. Sunyshore took priority to her own hometown, though, if for no other reason than it was more useful to Nox. Also, she put her friends before herself...and she would have to deal with her parents if she had any intentions of recapturing Verdanturf.
”Your fearlessness and determination are two things that make you a valuable ally and friend, Helios...” she told him quietly, sitting back a bit, letting the hot steam from her dinner cloud the air before her face some. ”Your knowledge and talent in your areas of expertise are things that will benefit Nox in the future. By reverse-engineering their technology I feel that you will be able to get a better grasp of it than even they have...in all due time, of course.” she told him, picking some of the vegetables that she’d ordered with her meal and placing them within her mouth, chewing slowly.
”I promise you, Volkner...” she said, pausing to sip her water, ”I will do everything that I can to win Sunyshore back for you, and for Nox. No matter how many Battles it takes, and no matter how many times we are beaten back, I will keep trying until we accomplish re-claiming Sunyshore. The same goes for territories in Hoenn. I have plans for Hoenn...big plans...but it will only happen slowly, and one city or town at a time.”
An idea entered her brain, one she’d been considering since they saw each other for the first time this evening. After mentally bickering with herself she decided to go ahead and propose her suggestion to him...though she would form it in the phrase of question with the faith he would understand her offer to teach him.
The Veteran trainer first took a forkful of rice and Miltank meat again as she considered how to ask him. The conclusion was simple and relatively straight to the point –
”Tell me, Volkner. What do you know about locks?”
